We recently connected with Maruja “Mocha” Tosses and have shared our conversation below.
Maruja “Mocha” , appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
The biggest risk for me, as someone who considered herself a “realist,” was to wholeheartedly trust God with everything I had. He pointed in the direction of nutrition, and I talked myself out of it because I didn’t realize that was a tap on my shoulder from the Holy Spirit. I thought, “Nah, that’s a huge responsibility. Not sure if I would be cut out to help people in that manner.” The funny thing is, I was a real estate agent when I got the tap on the shoulder. My resources were drying up. “What in the world was going on?” In one of the prayer groups I am an active member of, one of the women asked me, “Are you SURE you are supposed to be doing real estate?” “Yes!” I quickly replied. I grew up as a “real estate” brat, and the way I passed my test despite not having taken the real estate classes in almost 6 months to pass it on the first try was God. Not me. I was curious why she would ask that of all things, I thought. Months passed, and the real estate wilderness was beginning to affect me more than I cared to acknowledge.
I was on a call with the same prayer group again, and out of nowhere, I uttered, “I think I’m supposed to be a nutritionist?” One of the ladies started yelling, “It’s about TIME!” I was surprised, to say the least. “Huh?” The young lady explained she saw a vision of me helping people online, explaining and doing movement. Speaking to many people at podiums. I laughed to myself because I had a similar dream to hers. That was confirmation. I asked, “Well, what do I do now?” The advice I was given was to ask the Holy Spirit and let Him guide me. At that point, I put real estate to the side, as I was told again by different sources to keep my real estate license. I will need it later. Done. After that day, I surrendered to God and told Him I trusted Him. “Lead, and I will follow.” It has been a road of learning, discovering who I am, and discovering no situation is wasted (He used the time I was doing real estate as a warm-up as to how to use certain skills). It has been a road of seeing miracles in real-time, for others as well as myself. It has been a road to meeting people around the country, and even people that live overseas. It has been a test to see if I would fold when things got rough. He chose the right one for this mission. I am here and doing the work. The risk of figuring out how God sees me and walking in it has been crazy good. I pray that I can teach my clients what they see today as “the starting point.” God needs His people to stand in SUPREME HEALTH to carry out the assignments He has for them.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
For most people who become diabetic, they are told by a doctor in an office after receiving test results. I was told after coming out of a coma in the hospital. As a kid, all I knew was that I had been sleeping for a while. I was curious to know where I was and why I had all sorts of wires and tubes coming from my body. My mom was there. After asking questions to figure out my location and why I felt like I was the exhibit at a museum, my mom told me to hold on. She alerted the staff I was awake. The influx of doctors showed up and asked me many questions. As a child, I was thinking, “Why are you all asking me obvious questions I am positive you know the answer to?” They were checking brain function. As a mom now, I can only imagine the stress caused by the situation. It was in that long “sleep” that God gave me the download. Everyone is here for a reason; my reason is to help believers get into SUPREME HEALTH using God’s methods and resources, His way. No lab ingredients needed. All of the trials and tribulations I have been through in what I thought was to get my blood sugars in alignment turned out to be a long training period for testing different eating/exercising lifestyles to help not only myself but MANY other people as well. God was in the process of qualifying me to do what I do now, CEO of Restor8tioNutrition LLC, better known as Mocha the Kingdom Nutritionist.
I teach believers how to decipher what they are eating and how it affects their health. This allows the clients to make educated changes to improve their wellness lifestyle. Bible-based, Holy Spirit-led. You may often find me asking, “What’s in it?” or asking, “What ‘majibowitz’ it has in it?” We work from a “master list” of foods that have been researched and tested to help maintain and improve health. The list is extensive, so clients can explore new foods or simply go with what they know. The truth is, either food helps you or harms you. No in-between. We help you build a new lifestyle, not a diet. What separates Restor8tioNutrition apart from other companies is that I DO the program with you. God told me to hold the clients accountable, so after the assessments are established for nutrition/fitness and starting points are set, the athletic trainer comes in and walks us through the workouts set specifically for the client. The workouts are often less than 30 minutes. Mindsets are often changed through this process, the client hears God more clearly, and changes in physical appearance as well as supreme health are established.
The results have been nothing short of miraculous. Goals have been achieved. Everything from weight loss to healthy weight gain (and being able to maintain it), to not having to stay on blood pressure medication. Energy has been restored, anxiety has been released, and most importantly, the education of food has been passed down to the kids. Six months with us will change you and your family’s life.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
OMGoodness! Yes! There are 4- I understand/relate to the principles and look up to the consistency, and accountability a successful business owner must possess to have a business of integrity and get- stuff doneness:
- The Bible – This is the ULTIMATE how-to manual. Just when you think you have it, you go back and get new answers to your questions. It is the only book that has just as much meaning now as it did when it was written. I find that if you want adventure, it is here. If you want truth, it’s in here. If you want instruction, guess what? It’s in here. Different versions hit differently, so referencing different versions is fun.
- Extreme Ownership by Jocko Willink and Leif Babin. This is a must (I believe) for business owners, anyone, really. The book reads like a non-fiction, but it gives insight into how to be accountable, how to be responsible. Do not deflect responsibility. Take ownership quickly so you can get to the solution. If you mess up, own it. If you succeed, be humble. There will come a time when you will have to take accountability for something.
- Can’t Hurt Me by David Goggins. This book gave a voice to perseverance. No excuses. It reinforced that our mind is more powerful than the body. If you believe you can, then you can. Period. When I feel frustrated, I hear, “You have 40% more.”
- Relentless: From Good to Great to Unstoppable by Tim Grover. This book shows the difference between good, better, and best, what being a lynchpin looks like in real-time, what it takes to be a cleaner.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I believe that letting the Holy Spirit guide me is what helped build my reputation in the market. The fact that I have been a type 1 diabetic for 38 years adds to my credibility. The experience I have gained from trying different eating and health habits is invaluable. I wouldn’t steer anyone in a direction I haven’t tried first. How can you know if something works if you haven’t tried it yourself? How can you understand the side effects? How can you navigate those side effects? I don’t believe in using other people as test subjects. Each client is someone’s everything, and we should treat every client as if they are related to us.
