We recently connected with Martryce Roach and have shared our conversation below.
Martryce , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
Every year, I participate in the Windows of Understanding “We See Through Hate” public arts initiative in my hometown, New Brunswick, NJ. The vision for this public art project is to transform main street spaces into literal windows of understanding; spaces in which the diverse community can learn about the positive strides being made by local organizations around a wide array of social justice issues that don’t always make daily headlines. Our belief is that through visual language, artists can communicate methods of understanding in powerful ways that cut across cultural boundaries. This year, I worked with the NJ Black Women Physicians Association to create two 8-foot by 5-foot drawings centered around maternal health for vulnerable populations in New Brunswick, NJ.

Martryce , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
With pastel, I create vibrant landscapes layered with geometric shapes, architecture, and figures. My work invites minds to different perspectives, allowing for complex conversations. It pulls the eyes in because it is wildly exhilarating, providing a fun visual escape, but I also experiment with the layering of images to deliver messages about challenges impacting communities and to spread awareness about social issues. It really brings me great joy to just make my surfaces dance with ideas.
Recently, I have become deeply inspired by how elements of our environments shape us. My new work explores the intersection between physical space and human behavior. To me, life is filled with twists, blocks, turns and waves, and how we swerve through those changes tells a powerful story. It makes for a magical visual.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Being creative is like having a super power. Art is so beautiful and inviting that it opens the hearts and minds of people about subjects they might not otherwise be interested in considering.
