We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Martinaene Johnson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Martinaene below.
Martinaene, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
At first, I wished that I had figured out what I was really passionate about in my early twenties, then maybe I’d be much further along in life. But I feel that everything happens according to divine timing. What also helped me figure out I that I was a creative or wanted to expand on being a creator was remembering the things I loved to do as a child up to my teenage years. I loved writing, reading, puzzles drawing and being a performing artists in the middle of my living room or bathroom mirror with my imaginary mic in my hand. At one point there was an attempt to be a fashion designer or teach my imaginary second grade classroom. How fun, right? I went through all the stages of what I could possibly do not realizing all that I was doing went hand in hand and I was already on the right path as a creator. I finally broke out of my stage fright a bit and began my teenage years as a model. I’m walking in my purpose now as an educator, but still following my passion as model, writer and puzzle maker. I’m still exercising my skills in making more crafts and maybe you’ll get to see me on what will be your favorite movie one day.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I began modeling around 16 years old. I started trained at Barbizon modeling and acting school. As I got older, I got more into freelance modeling and finding my own runway and print gigs. I really enjoy being a runway model the most. I’m now creating my own photoshoots and will soon be creative directing shoots for other models. In March 2021, I launched my puzzle making and craft business, Piece of Mind, llc where I create custom puzzles from my own artwork and photos. Customers can also send in their own photos if they like to be made into a puzzle. I plan on making other crafts that customers can purchase from my site as well. Currently, I’m in the process of relaunching my business and adding more things to the site like fictional stories and personal journals written by myself. My versatility and uniquely awkward personality at times sets me apart and allows me to remain authentically me. I’m most proud of being a mother along this creative journey as well. The balance of raising my son and following my passion, allows me to be an example to my child by showing him to always do what you love and that when you do what you love you’ll always be abundant and that it’s never just work.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I get to express myself how I want and when I want. I get to take all my ideas, visions, daydreams and bring them to life even when I’m collaborating with others as a team.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I’ve pretty much got the modeling and being crafty down packed, but as a writer, the goal is to have at least one of my stories made into a movie.
