We were lucky to catch up with Martina Monet recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Martina thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
In 2020 I had become exhausted from working 40+ hours a week at a pretty demanding job. I had been selling jewelry regularly to some of my coworkers & to my online followers for a few years & finally gained the confidence that I would be successful in living solely off of money I earned from selling my jewelry online. I’ve been creating for as long as I can remember & it’s truly the only thing that makes me feel fulfilled, so I took a giant leap of faith & quit my full time job as an Optician to pursue my jewelry making full time & I haven’t looked back since! I’m very grateful that I get to wake up every morning & head to my studio to do something I genuinely love & look forward to every day. Nothing feels better to me than knowing I can make people happy with my work while being so happy myself to make it! I never wonder about going down a different path as I feel like I’ve found my calling with jewelry!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m Martina Monet, a 26 year old self taught jeweler & artist of many mediums!
I’m currently focusing on my love of jewelry design & bringing my designs to life through wire wrapping! I started making simple wire wrapped jewelry back in 2020 & decided to really dive in & start selling my more intricate pieces once my coworkers at the job I was working at the time started to take notice & place orders for custom pieces of their own. I had been selling stickers & prints of my artwork & embroidery pieces on my online shop for a few years by then, but decided to take the leap & start selling my jewelry when I realized how much I loved making people feel beautiful with my jewelry pieces.
It’s taken years to develop the jewelry making skills I have now. I pride myself on my ability to bring even my most intricate original designs into reality by combining many different weaving & braiding styles together to make wire wrapped pieces unlike any others I’ve seen before. I’m motivated to continue sharing my art with the world in hopes that it will resonate with someone & help them to see the beauty in themselves & the world around them. Whether that be through preserving flowers, foliage, & natural crystals in resin, painting the illusion of reality onto a blank canvas, or weaving a home for a gemstone through my wire wrapping. The beauty & wonder of nature is what I’m most inspired by when creating. I aim for my work to exude an essence of natural, ethereal, imperfect beauty, & to show gratitude for the gifts mother Earth gives us by weaving homes for natures gemstones with natures precious metals.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
In late 2018 I stopped creating for a while after the passing of my older brother Terrance, better known as BD. After suffering such a painful loss nothing felt real to me & I felt sure I wanted to stop creating for good. I chose to continue because I believe my brother would be proud to see me thriving off of my artwork & living my life happily, always expressing myself & taking risks, just like he did. My jewelry & artwork is one of the mechanisms I use for healing & motivation to move forward in life.
Through the overwhelming & unexpected support of my artwork & jewelry from all the people I’ve connected with online, I’ve made many accomplishments that my younger self would only dream about. Such as having my art homed in every state in the US & across multiple different countries abroad, showcasing my work at many different art shows, & finding myself again in the process. I hope to continue creating as a full time artist, sharing my work around the world & spreading love for as long as I live.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I just hope to make jewelry that helps people to see the beauty in themselves & everything around them by connecting them to a tiny piece of Earths gifts to us. We’re all just bodies made of the same elements that Earth uses to give us beautiful gemstones & precious metals after all!
