We recently connected with Martina Demaio and have shared our conversation below.
Martina, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
I think it is important to take risks in life, to make decisions that will take us to the place we want to be. Making the choice to move to New York was a big life decision, one that involved a lot of risk. It all started during the pandemic where I was in an acting and dancing university in Argentina, while my siblings were having the time of their lives in Australia, saving a lot of money. So I was in the mindset of leaving everything and moving to Australia to save money and then study acting in New York later in life. By chance, I saw an Au Pair program in the United States where you can live with a family, take care of their kids while being in the city. After lots of thinking, I knew it wasn’t money I was after; it was the pursuit of participating in art with like minded people. With a lot of fear I got onto that plane thinking it will only last a year and then I will have to go somewhere else. However, once I had landed I knew it was worth it. The hard work as a live in Au Pair paid off, as it meant that I could see what my future could be like living in the city. I decided to pursue my dream, make my mark in the big pond and dive head first, by joining a prestigious acting school in The American Academy of Dramatic Arts. From there, life has been nothing short of magical, scary, stressful but rewarding. That one decision to ‘go for it’ is something I will always cherish and I have never looked back.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Martina and I am originally from Argentina. I am half Italian so I have had the pleasure of living in Europe for a while. I’ve been an artist for the past 10 years and I fall more in love with it everyday,
Everyone always says I am one of the most hardworking people you’ll meet. Though sometimes I think I’m going crazy, I tend to agree with them. I love bettering myself for my craft, as that’s what I’m here for, something which I am extremely proud of. However, at the end of last year I had one of the hardest times that I’ve experienced. Being an artist is hard. Being an artist in New York is even harder. I was experiencing some anxiety but with a lot of help and information I got myself back in shape, and I am enjoying life again. I stayed in the city and I never gave up which I am grateful for. Now I help others who have the same issues I had because it’s hard but once you understand your mind and you are not afraid of it, you are unstoppable.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the ability to create art for the audience. To make the audience leave the stage or cinema feeling different from how they walked in. Inspired and motivated. I want them to forget about all their problems in their life for the time the show runs.
Shows for kids are really inspiring because they truly believe you are the princess and they look up to you. Leaving a good message is the goal.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Dating another actor is a challenging process.
With my partner, when we started dating, we had to sit down and talk about rehearsals and what we would like our boundaries to be.
It was and is challenging at times but nowadays I’m thankful for all those conversations. We feel extremely confident, safe and trusting.
