We were lucky to catch up with Martin Munoz recently and have shared our conversation below.
Martin, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
Everyone has a moment in time where they would like a “re-do” and us at Yo’z Moon Production are the same! Each of us have our stories, hardships, and successes and the idea that if we had started earlier in our creative journey, we would be enjoying what we are now. Definitely practice makes perfect, and as much time practicing reflects when the time comes to deliver, yet life happens, and that creates the character in each plot. We all have moments where we have struggled in our youth where we may have turned to negative outlets for help and support, with little positive options for us to consider. Our art gave us that space needed to cope with life, but it was only when we matured where we began to share what we were doing to heal in hiding. Some of us were writing, dancing, drawing; we all created as therapy. When we are young, we have the tendency to live life fast since we only lived a relatively short life so far, so fast money, impulse decisions, and lack of experience may sway us from our full potentials. But it is ok! Everything happens for a reason. Anything different and it may sway us from being who we are today.
So YMP does have those moments where we would like to have started this company earlier to have had a positive outlet for the founding members, but we have accepted that each of us comes from a different walk of life and brings those experiences to our production round table. What we have gone through builds our testimony and sparks our motivation to give back to the community by creating a space for Space City to walk!
We started YMP as an umbrella company to give a name to something we were already doing. In 2020 we established our LLC, and since then we are looking to expand into the nonprofit sector to bridge the gap between our graduating students and our local work force. We are using the same energy of “going back in time to start sooner” to create that space sooner for our youth. Starting early would not have allowed us to develop the foundation we have and strengthened with the love for art. We are good with starting when we did, but we still have our moments where we scratch our heads. Who knows where we would be, but we are here now giving back to the future!
Martin, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Certainly! We are Yo’z Moon Production Company. The Martin Munoz Bros. are the founders and CEO’s of the brand. The company was established in 2020 to create the foundation for our creative projects to build for feature productions in Houston for the future. Our concentration currently is live performances with stage management, promotions, and artistry. We also have captured moments for Houstonians at birthdays, graduations, and special events. Our main goal is to energize the film industry in Houston with our creative contributions, organization, and production training for college students, interns, and entry-level enthusiasts.
This calling came from a struggle that one of our founders had while attempting to find a local film company that would be able to satisfy practicum hours to graduate: so we created it! That is when YMP was established. We realized “Houston we have a problem” losing our students, educational investments, and future production crews to the out-of-state competitive markets in Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, and now Atlanta! As one of the top 5 largest cities in the Nation, where is our film industry footprint? YMP is part of the answer with each event, each project, and each smile from the community. We are giving back by developing a program to keep our students home, and create a space for them to reach out-of-this-world productions!
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The smiles! Your smiles, our smiles…everyone’s smiles! We are in the entertainment industry so our reward is that simple. We work hard for audiences to pay us with their most valuable tender: their time. Our aim is to enjoy delivering our product as much as our audiences enjoy receiving them. We enjoy the interaction and satisfying our enthusiasts with a great show in a safe environment.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Support local artists and creative projects just like we support our local sports teams. We have a great opportunity to develop our film industry as a community since our media footprint is just starting to take shape in film and theatrics. This is a great chance for local investors to support film projects, communities to get involved, and for our industry to create more jobs in production. We love the idea of developing the Astrodome into a film studio with opportunity to create tourists attractions and possibly even a theme park based on film productions. Attend festivals where local art is being displayed, and consider purchasing a piece; they are always great conversation starters! Volunteer expertise about business administration, organization, and resources. The film industry is like any other business, and at times artists are unaware how to market themselves, or their art, and require assistance understanding how commerce works. Sharing on social media is a great way to get the word out, expand exposure, and show appreciation to artists for their talents. And above all, keep praying for artists to keep giving the world meaning with heart, tragedy, and resilience for all to interpret and benefit from together as humankind.
