We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Martin Lopez. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Martin below.
Martin, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
Naming a company can be challenging for many, but for me, it was a simple decision. I named my company Salsa Toro after my father, who introduced me to the world of hot sauce and peppers at a young age. My father’s nickname was “El Toro,” and I vividly remember the day when I was just five years old, and I watched him bite into a jalapeño. His love for spicy food was contagious, and I couldn’t resist asking him for one for my taco. After taking my first bite, I was hooked. It brings me great joy to honor my father’s legacy by naming my company after him.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I traveled to Monterrey, Mexico four years ago to visit my cousins and taste the family salsa recipe. The recipe had been kept a secret for three generations, but I wanted to bring that flavor to Texas and turn it into a business. After years of development, working with my family, and bottling the salsa, we finally launched Salsa Toro. Despite the challenges posed by Covid-19, we managed to develop three amazing flavors: Habanero, Cambray, and Piquin, each loaded with heat and stunning savor. I am thrilled to share this family recipe with the world and believe that people will truly enjoy it.
Developing our product was a challenging process. We had to ensure that all aspects of our business were in order, from logistics to labeling. We worked hard to secure enough peppers from farmers and took great care to ensure their quality. Despite a few setbacks with label printing, we remained committed to producing a high-quality product. Overall, we are proud of the effort we put into developing our product and are excited to share it with our customers.
We love compliments, but as Texans, we cherish one compliment the most. It’s when people tell us that our sauce is so good and wonder why we’re not at HEB yet. Thank you for recognizing the quality of our sauce. We’re always looking for ways to expand our reach and we appreciate your support.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Growing a business is a trial-and-error process that requires modifying your delivery or pitch to fit your unique needs. Quality and consistency are key to keeping customers, and quality control is the standard that must be set. Consistency is the driving force that will keep your clientele coming back for more. By maintaining these two things, you can build a loyal customer base that will follow you wherever you go.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Our hot sauce is renowned for its exceptional quality in the state of Texas. We owe our success to the recipe that was already perfect, coupled with our expertise in selecting the best peppers and nurturing the soil. Building a brand’s reputation is a gradual process that requires dedication and hard work. We are proud of the reputation we have built and will continue to work tirelessly to maintain it.
