Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Martin Flores. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Martin, appreciate you joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
I’m realizing i need to follow my heart more. Self-initiated projects are really doing it for me.
Martin, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a graphic designer by trade, but I’ve been doing creative stuff my whole life. I started getting into design in high school, where we had majors. My teachers were really generous with their time and supplies, allowing us to really go after any project we wanted to work on.
I’m really interested in imbuing my work with a sense of humor. There’s something sharply critical about a joke.
I’m proud of work that interacts with the public and gets an emotional reaction from the viewer. I once printed 1000 anti-Trump posters and gave them out at the first anti-trump protest in NYC. My friends started sending me images of the posters showing up on different news orgs. It felt really satisfying to interact with the public like that.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Society needs to do a better job at supporting its workers in general. Not just creatives. Artists aren’t known to make much money. Lots of artists would do amazing things if the rent was lower, if they weren’t living paycheck to paycheck, if they could afford health insurance. Our society is sick. It’s time to fix it.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
I like these folks: David Graeber, Adam Curtis, Robert Greene, Elliot Earls. Basically, I’ve learned that I need to listen to my gut more often because that’s how I’ll learn what I want from the world.
Oh, I also learned about the philosophical idea known as the Rhizome by Deleuze and Guattari. If you find someone to explain it to you in a simple way, it’s a grand way to view the world and all the interconnectedness of it.
