We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Martin Cordido a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Martin, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Alright, so we’d love to hear about how you got your first client or customer. What’s the story?
I have been very creative since I was young and I liked to make things I imagined come true, I always had a facility for manual tasks, when I started my company I worked mainly as a handyman, once a client who had already done several jobs showed me an image of an accent wall and he asked me if I could do it, I immediately said yes! although I did not have the best tools for that the result was very good, I posted it on my social media and many other clients asked me to do something similar for them, over time I focused only on custom interior work.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I came to this beautiful and amazing country 6 years ago with my wife and my 2 daughters fleeing from the terrible crisis in my country Venezuela, I started working on construction and remodeling projects in NYC and I learned a lot about the construction system of the United States, I was part of the Star Wars project team Galaxy Edge in Hollywood Studios for a year and a half, it was an incredible school, after some time I decided to found my handyman services company called HANDYMARTIN LLC, step by step I gained the trust of my clients, many called me again when they needed something. That clients referred me to new clients, after some time I had more work than I thought and my wife began to help me, when we decided to dedicate ourselves exclusively to custom interior work the business grew much more offering accent walls, entertainment centers, fireplaces built ins, faux ceiling beams and much more, we bought new tools, a work van, modern equipment to make the work more efficient.
My main challenge is to understand the vision that each client has about a project and make it a reality, I think that there are many talented people doing good jobs, that is why I try to stand out by taking care of every detail, now it is very difficult to respond to the many messages that I receive daily requesting our services, the time is not enough to work 10 hours a day, share time with the family and respond to service requests, but I work to be more efficient in dealing with potential clients.
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
making you look like a coworker, it’s inspiring that the boss sweats too.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
My initial capital was a tax return and some savings, Although we needed the money for other important things, I decided to bet on starting my business and so far the result has been positive.
