Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Martín. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Martín thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I was born in a relatively small town in Argentina and went to the Buenos Aires (+12 million people and nation’s capital) and there I discovered an entire new world of literature, not only narrative but also graphic novels and other genres. Then I started wondering why there’s not a single bookshop in my town offering good quality literature, mostly from small and independent publishers. So I decided to open a small bookshop offering a good selection of contemporary narrative, poetry and essays. Also, a friend who was selling used books in his house moved his bookshop into the same space as mine.
Martín, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I think I answered most of this in the previous question. Frontera Libros is a unique bookshop in the area because is attended and curated with love, offering books that we think will stand the test of time. It’s also a space of debate, recommendations, suggestions, good music and last but not least, plenty of time to browse the shelves and leisurely your next read.
We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
Julián is the owner of Librerio, the second-hand bookshop that coexists with Frontera Libros.
I met him walking around my neighborhood, he had the garage of his house covered by shelves, used books everywhere. I was pretty suprised by the discovery, then being even more amazed that his selection was nothing less than exciting. A couple of months after that he was notified that the house he was renting had been sold, so I proposed him to coexist and share the expenses and divide the days of being in charge of opening the shop.
Do you sell on your site, or do you use a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc?
We use a mixed of a custom made bookshop management software (I’m also a software developer) and TiendaNube, an ecommerce platform. This mix enables us to adapt the internal software to our needs, save some money, keep up to constant price changes (Argentina!) and connecting to an established and widely used ecommerce platform we don’t need to host our own website, certificates, connection to payment services, etc.
