We were lucky to catch up with Martha Rice recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Martha , thanks for joining us today. What’s the best advice you ever gave to a client? How did they benefit / what was the result? (Please note this response is for education/entertainment purposes only and shouldn’t be construed as advice for the reader)
The most important relationship you can have, is with yourself!
This is the foundational advice I’ve given to many clients who have struggled with identity, relationships, and personal fulfillment. It’s also the most transformative piece of wisdom I’ve seen take root in someone’s life.
One client, in particular, came to me feeling lost. She had spent years adapting to every relationship and social circle she entered, molding herself to fit the expectations of others. In her words, she felt like an actress playing different roles, never truly knowing who she was. As a result, she experienced anxiety, exhaustion, and a constant fear of being “found out.”
I guided her through a journey of self-discovery, helping her recognize patterns of people-pleasing, fear of rejection, and the ways she had silenced her own needs. Through coaching, reflection, and intentional self-work, she began to uncover her true self, understanding her values, passions, and voice.
The result? A newfound confidence that allowed her to set boundaries, form authentic connections, and live with purpose. She no longer felt the need to perform; instead, she embraced her identity fully. Her relationships became richer, and her inner peace deepened.
If you find yourself constantly shifting to fit different roles, it may be a sign that you haven’t truly discovered who you are. Authenticity is not about performing, it’s about being. When you stop acting and start living in alignment with your true self, you’ll attract the right people, opportunities, and experiences that genuinely resonate with you.
So, I ask you: Who are you when no one is watching? That answer holds the key to your most fulfilling relationships, with yourself and others.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Unlearning the Lie: My Journey to Owning My Intelligence
For much of my life, I carried the belief that I wasn’t smart enough. Growing up in a chaotic home, my elementary and high school grades were average, reinforcing the idea that I wasn’t particularly intelligent. I was even told outright that I wasn’t smart enough to be a counselor or anything in that field, something that had always been my passion. Those words, combined with my own self-doubt, made me believe that I wasn’t capable of earning a degree or achieving any form of professional certification.
Despite my earlier struggles with self-doubt, something shifted when I pursued higher education. To my surprise, I consistently ranked at the top of my college classes. The same person who once believed she wasn’t “smart enough” was excelling academically. That was the moment I had to confront the false narrative I had carried for years.
But the real moment of unlearning came when my supervisor in counseling asked me a simple question: “Why are you so concerned about grades?” I shared my story with him about the struggles, the chaos, the belief that my intelligence was tied to my past academic performance. Instead of dismissing my concerns, he walked me through my childhood, my home life, the lack of structure, and the stories I had unknowingly accepted as truth.
It was in that conversation that I had a profound realization: Had I been given structure, stability, and support, my grades would have reflected my true potential. It wasn’t that I wasn’t smart, it was that I had been navigating an environment that didn’t foster academic success.
I had been measuring intelligence by the wrong standards, comparing myself to external expectations instead of recognizing my ability to think critically, solve problems, and connect deeply with others. I realized that my intelligence had never been in question. only my belief in it.
Unlearning this lie opened the door to everything I’ve accomplished today such as earning certifications, building a successful coaching business, and guiding others toward their own transformations. Now, when I work with clients struggling with self-doubt, I remind them of a truth I had to learn myself: Your potential is not determined by your past or by what others have told you. It’s determined by what you choose to believe and the actions you take.
I share this because I know I’m not alone in having once believed I wasn’t capable. But I also know that anyone can rewrite their story. If you’ve ever felt like you weren’t smart enough, capable enough, or worthy enough, let me tell you: You are. And you always have been.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
While training and knowledge are essential in life coaching, passion and a genuine desire to serve others are what truly set a coach apart. Success in this field isn’t just about mastering coaching techniques or understanding human behavior, it’s about having a deep commitment to helping people transform their lives.
For me, coaching is more than a profession; it’s a “calling”. My passion fuels my work, allowing me to connect authentically with clients, meet them where they are, and guide them toward meaningful change. Empathy, active listening, and the ability to create a safe space for growth are just as critical as any certification.
At the core of my success is my heart for service. Whether I’m coaching individuals through personal struggles, helping professionals navigate career transitions, or guiding couples toward healthier relationships, my focus is always on empowering others to reach their fullest potential. When you approach coaching with a servant’s heart, you don’t just provide advice, you walk alongside clients, celebrate their victories, and support them through challenges.
In this industry, knowledge may open doors, but it’s passion and service that make a lasting impact. When you truly care about the people you serve, success naturally follows.
