We were lucky to catch up with Martha Reineke recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Martha , thanks for joining us today. Almost all entrepreneurs have had to decide whether to start now or later? There are always pros and cons for waiting and so we’d love to hear what you think about your decision in retrospect. If you could go back in time, would you have started your business sooner, later or at the exact time you started?
If I could go back in time and know I’d have the same success with my editing firm, I’d have started much sooner. I spent a few years teaching in a private school, but I realized that homeschooling my children was really my passion. I left the work force to teach them from the time my oldest was in 3rd grade. It was all I thought about for so long I almost forgot who I was other than “mother” or “teacher.” When my sister published her first book, she had me read through it and do some light editing. I remembered how much I loved writing and editing, and the rest is history. I found a few clients who helped me tremendously by word of mouth advertising, and it put a wind in my sails I’d forgotten about. Homeschooling was one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done, and transitioning back into the workforce after being away for so long was easier because I started my own company. I think I waited longer than necessary to take the leap, and I wish I’d have jumped sooner, because I really found what I’m passionate about now!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’ve always been an avid reader and writer, starting as early as my pre-teen years. It was really my sister’s influence in her writing pursuits that encouraged me to reinvestigate mine. Her self-publishing journey set me on one of my own, which led me to a wonderful community of indie authors who need affordable editing services. I started small, finding a few solid clients by word of mouth, then growing until I was able to form my company with the help of a partner. We started by providing only editing services, but now we partner with affiliates to provide the whole host of self-publishing services from editing to cover design, interior format and even ghostwriting. I think what sets us apart from the competition is that we are not just a “one size fits all” type of service. We place our heart and our passion behind everything we do. Our clients become partners in creation, and we help them grow their business and brand too. I’m honored to work with a group of professionals who all understand my core belief that our goal is to serve humbly and go above and beyond for our clients. Our humble beginning, and the fact that every one of us is a self-published author, means that we understand all the struggles of indie authors. We are uniquely positioned to empower indies to elevate their level of professionalism and success.
How’d you meet your business partner?
I met my partner, Whitney Sivill, when she came to me for her own editing needs. She heard about us via word of mouth, as do most of our clients, and she had such fabulous stories, I decided to try her out as a developmental editor. I had no idea she had done some excellent work for Brandon Sanderson and a few other well-known authors. I was ecstatic to find someone so experienced who had the same heart as me. It was the beginning of our now partnership, for which I am eternally grateful.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
When Covid hit, it hit everyone. Our company was no different. We began to see a slow dip in business around mid-2020. It was then that my partner and I found some other work doing freelance ghostwriting for another firm. At that time we had offered a bit of ghostwriting, but nothing to any scale level. Over the next year or so, we not only learned so much more about the industry, but we picked up some great new colleagues and a lot more experience. When our business started to pick back up, we were able to take all the excellent information we gleaned to apply to the company, and because of our flexibility and reslilience, we never had a negative month!
