We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Martha Davidson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Martha, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
My leadership journey began after college, starting in the mailroom and progressing to managing keypunch operators. This foundational role taught me essential lessons in team leadership and risk-taking.
One of my biggest risks was leaving an organization after 18 years of significant managerial success to pursue new opportunities. Relocating my family to a new state for this role was challenging and ultimately didn’t work out. However, it taught me the importance of thoroughly investigating a company’s culture and work environment.
This experience led to a rewarding leadership position with a major company in South America. The wisdom I gained allowed me to excel and make a meaningful impact, demonstrating that taking risks can lead to valuable opportunities and growth.
Martha, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
In my leadership journey, I discovered that my actions were not always aligned with my aspirations. I often felt unappreciated, overlooked, and stressed, not being seen or heard for my achievements. As I explored how to amplify my executive presence, I found the power of neuroscience to be transformative. Neuroscience reveals that setting clear leadership intentions activates specific neural pathways in the brain, enhancing focus and motivation toward achieving those goals. When individuals consciously set intentions, they engage areas of the brain associated with decision-making and goal-directed behavior, strengthening executive presence, commitment, and clarity in pursuit of their objectives.
Moreover, understanding the neuroscience behind leadership has taught me the importance of aligning my goals with my values and beliefs. This alignment not only boosts motivation but also reduces internal conflict, promoting authenticity and purpose in my leadership approach. By leveraging neuroscience principles, I’ve learned to foster a positive mindset and resilience, crucial for navigating challenges and setbacks effectively.
Applying these insights practically, I integrate mindfulness practices into my daily routine to enhance my ability to set and achieve intentions. Techniques such as visualization and affirmation help reinforce neural connections related to goal attainment, empowering me to stay focused and resilient amidst uncertainties.
In essence, neuroscience has illuminated how intentions shape our leadership journey by influencing our thoughts, emotions, and actions. This understanding is beneficial for all aspiring and seasoned leaders. By consciously aligning your goals with your values, you can boost motivation, reduce internal conflict, and foster a sense of purpose. This approach not only enhances personal growth but also strengthens your leadership effectiveness. It helps you inspire others, reach your full potential as a standout leader with executive presence, and work smarter by minimizing overwhelm, burnout, and stress
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Overcoming significant challenges shaped my early life. My mother died during my birth, and by the age of six, I had been in and out of six foster homes. This instability and trauma led to selective mutism, making it difficult for me to speak in certain situations despite being able to speak normally at other times. These experiences made my early years incredibly tough, and I often felt isolated and voiceless.
The turning point in my life came when my adoptive mother, whom I call my earth angel, saw potential in me that others had overlooked. She taught me how to speak and communicate effectively and fought against educational bias to ensure I was not labeled and placed in special education. Through her relentless love, consistency, and efforts to cultivate my resilience, I became an honor student by the time I entered high school.
Resilience, instilled in me by my earth angel, has been the wind beneath my wings whenever I face personal and professional challenges. Resilience is more than just bouncing back from setbacks; it unlocks untapped possibilities through the lessons learned. This resilience has enabled me to navigate life’s obstacles with strength and grace, continually propelling me forward.
I am forever grateful for my earth angel’s unwavering love and determination to ensure I excelled and became successful. Her dedication inspired me to empower others facing similar life challenges.
