We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Martelle Graham . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Martelle below.
Hi Martelle, thanks for joining us today. Let’s jump to the end – what do you want to be remembered for?
Hopes for my legacy…… I want to remembered for how I make or made people felt. I want to be remembered as being the most unapologetic version of me. I want to be remembered as the artist who lived through her art without fear, without judgement. An artist who turned her dreams and visions from the universe to reality, the artist who set her self apart from the “standard” which is crazy to even to think about considering , art is subjective.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Ive spent most of my life in Akron Ohio, as a kid I’ve always had a very active imagination. I would doodle on paper, walls, under the table, inside of dressers anywhere I could express myself through art I would. During high school I got more technical training and started learning more about myself and the gift I have from that point on I’ve became 100% self taught in every medium I use. My preferred mediums are oil and digital. I create images visions thoughts or ideas I receive through meditations and bring them to the physical realm in the most surreal way possible. Trying to merge the subconscious and conscious were all can see. As of latley I’ve been entering a new realm of creativity that sets me apart from others, and it’s some of the most fulfilling artworks I’ve created. It’s exciting given that people can connect to my artwork and be able to take that home with them, rather it be buying a lighter, commissioning artwork, getting prints, or just a simple like on social media. We are all connected.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding part of being a creative is being able to connect to others via art. It’s just another way to remind the masses we are not that much different from one another. You’re never really alone, your journey will lead you to where you need to be if you just trust it.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
The process of creating is a spiritual and draining process. Contrary to what most believe this process is never a quick and easy one. especially when it’s a not something you may not always have a connection to. However, communication is the most important aspect in this situation. Communication and clear expectations all is well.
