Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Marta Sulima. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Marta, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about how you got your first non-friend, non-family client. Paint the picture for us so we can feel the same excitement you felt on that day.
My first client came kind of in the same way that got me to start my elopement photography business, which was actually thanks to starting an Instagram account for my dog! I had really gotten deeper into my photography when I started the account and earned a pretty large following. When I decided to start up a photography business geared towards photographing couples, I put out a call in my Instagram story looking for couples who might want a free photo session. One of my followers saw the story and had recently gotten engaged, so she decided why not get free engagement photos. Well, after they received their photos, they were in love, paid me a nice tip for the session, and decided to hire me to photograph their wedding!
Marta, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I have always loved getting outside and taking photos. I wanted to combine my passion for photography and my love of the mountains to start a new career. I decided to create “Mountain Marta Photography”, an adventure elopement photography business dedicated to helping couples get married in the most epic locations!
I moved to Colorado in 2014 and have gone hiking at least once a week since then! I have explored areas all over the state and want to share the amazing locations I have discovered with my eloping clients. I also LOVE skiing. I learned how to ski pretty much since I learned how to walk! I think that is something unique I can definitely provide for adventurous couples who want to include skiing or snowboarding into their wedding day because skiing while taking photos is definitely not smoothing that every photographer can provide.
Couples who choose me to document their wedding day will not just get a photographer. I help my couples plan out their day from start to finish and help them choose the best locations based on what type of scenery they are looking for! I take pride in making sure they have the best elopement day in addition to getting beautiful photos.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
My photography business is actually my second career. I made a huge switch from being a Research Scientist with a PhD in Chemistry. After many years of pursuing a degree in Chemistry and getting a job out of grad school that really was not for me, I eventually decided to take a leap and follow my real dreams. Now I am a full-time elopement photographer!
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My main goal through my business is to help couples create a wedding day that is unique to them and them alone. No two couples are the same and I want that to be reflected in each and every one of my couples’ elopements. Whether they want to go skiing, fly fishing, hike for many miles, or simply cook a meal together because that is a pivotal part of their relationship, I want to help them make that happen!
