We recently connected with Marta Palombo and have shared our conversation below.
Marta, appreciate you joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
Pursuing a creative career has meant that everything I do is meaningful in some way, which is something I absolutely love. The work I do as an artist and the music I release is fulfilling and meaningful, simply because it’s the way that I process the world around me and express my own human experience. But it’s also meaningful to others — some of my favorite moments have been hearing others say that my songs helped them through a dark period in their life, or accompanied them through their happiest moments. It’s an honor and a privilege to be able to have any impact on others, big or small. As a voice teacher, the work I do is meaningful in a different way: rather than being a voice that expresses emotions for others, I help people find their own voice. I feel incredibly lucky that I am in a position where I can watch people grow and learn while learning from them myself, while also being in a position where I can release songs about my personal experiences that build a community around me.
Marta, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hi! My name is Marta Palombo, and I am an indie pop artist based out of Nashville. I was born in Italy, and fell in love with music in 4th grade the first time I opened my mouth to sing. I threw myself into every possible musical experience I could growing up, until I practically lived in my school’s choir room and then came home to write more music. (Fun fact, my high school’s policy on skipping became stricter the year after I graduated… I’m not saying that it was because my friends and I always skipped class to go hang out in the music rooms, but I’m also not NOT saying that…)
I knew I wanted music to be my life’s journey, so I moved to Nashville and threw myself into the music scene. I went to college for voice and composition, I played writers rounds and open mics, I wrote, I collaborated, I networked, and I carved out my own little happy place in this vibrant city!
As an artist, I’ve released a plethora of music, all heavily centered around building a world for the listener to melt into. Music should envelope you completely and take you on a journey, and that cinematic approach is exactly what I lean into with everything I write. I believe in allowing yourself to slow down in this fast paced life, and that’s exactly what music does for me and what I want my music to do for others: to allow everyone a safe space to breathe, be authentically yourself, and feel your emotions. I’ve been lucky enough to collaborate with some amazing people here and perform at some beautiful venues (my favorite being singing backup for Josh Groban at the Bridgestone Arena — seriously life-changing)! The ability to create art is something I never take for granted, and I am constantly blown away by the people I get to work with and inspired by the world around me.
When I’m not writing, I teach! Being a voice teacher is something I’ve always known was important to me, because my own teachers were so instrumental in helping me find my voice. Teaching voice isn’t teaching a musical instrument — it’s more about teaching people how to find themselves and express themselves. Every voice is completely, anatomically unique, and the uncovering of a person’s individuality is so beautiful to experience.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
This isn’t really a physical resource, but I will say that I wish I had understood earlier the importance of having a strong sense of self and professional worth. I have found that all of my best work creatively and financially has come from sticking to my vision, standing strong on what I value, and voicing my opinions. The creative industry is vast, chaotic, and endlessly changing. The only way to know if you’re doing something right is by trusting your gut and being a good person — there will always be contradicting opinions and people telling you the right and wrong ways to achieve success. So find a trusted few to give you feedback, and stand your ground on your creative vision. The music industry is a marathon, not a sprint — you have to be in it for the long haul!
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Happiness, stillness, and connection! Happiness in the sense that my measure of success is never numeric or financial — it is always determined by whether or not I am happy and proud of my work. That is why I started making music, and I try to bring myself back to it daily.
Stillness, because music is what has helped me process my emotions, find peace, and love the little things in life. This same stillness is what I hope I can give others through my music.
Connection, because my favorite projects have always come from connecting with people or working with other creatives. Even though I write all of my songs myself, it takes a village to bring it all to life with production, videos, photos, and marketing. I love getting to connect with people through my work and seeing what beautiful things we can do together!
