We were lucky to catch up with Marta D’Ocon recently and have shared our conversation below.
Marta, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
As I’ve grown older, I’ve come to a deeper understanding and appreciation for the decisions my parents made throughout my and my sisters’ lives. Whether it was encouraging us to explore various extracurricular activities, changing schools for a better education, or even relocating to different countries to broaden our horizons, their overarching objective was clear. They aimed to nurture us into resilient, versatile, and fulfilled women in both personal and professional aspects of our lives. Their encouragement to pursue our passions, even if they weren’t conventional or “safe” career paths, stands out as a testament to their unwavering support. They created an environment where we felt empowered to chase our dreams and instilled a sense of confidence and independence that has been invaluable in navigating life’s challenges.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Marta D’Ocon was born in Barcelona, Spain, and moved to Miami, Florida, at age 10. At 17, she settled in Los Angeles, California, attending Santa Monica College where she obtained a degree in Film Production. At SMC, Marta was chosen to direct her original script “The War Within,” depicting a young woman’s struggle to survive in a war-torn Latin American country. The film secured a generous grant from The Hollywood Foreign Press, was co-produced by Keslow Camera, and was an Official Selection of the American Pavilion’s Emerging Filmmaker Showcase at the Cannes Film Festival.
After graduation, she worked on various Hollywood productions like “S.W.A.T. (CBS),” “The Gray Man (Netflix),” and “Westworld (HBO)” in both production and health & safety roles.
With her production experience, she returned to Barcelona to refine her creative skills and pursue a Master’s degree in Film Directing at the renowned Escola Superior de Cinema i Audiovisuals de Catalunya (ESCAC). Her upcoming film “Entre la playa y el cielo” is in post-production, and she’s preparing to film her next project “Plou i fa sol” (working title).
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I’ve recently rediscovered the importance of collaboration. The creative journey can sometimes feel isolating, making you think you should tackle everything alone, unsure if others would be interested or if you’d be burdening them. Yet, it’s incredibly rewarding to find people eager to work with you. I believe in the magic of collaboration and always encourage my team to share their thoughts. Some of our best work emerges from the exchange of ideas and diverse perspectives.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Ultimately, I believe we create art and tell stories to explore aspects of ourselves we don’t fully understand. While it’s rewarding when an audience reacts to our creations, the most fulfilling part for me is the creative process itself. Despite its challenges, from solving puzzles to overcoming obstacles, there are moments of pure bliss. Whether it’s an actor delivering a perfect take, capturing a shot just as envisioned, or serendipitous events like a bird flying gracefully across the frame during a key stunt performance, it’s an indescribable feeling. Everything seems to align, and it’s a high like no other.
