We were lucky to catch up with Marso Maytorena recently and have shared our conversation below.
Marso, appreciate you joining us today. Has your work ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized?
A Lot Of People Always Want To Put Me In A Box. I remember meeting a guy that had my food and he told me “I seen you do Comedy, What Happened With That?” I Told Him I still do comedy and I also do music! He said “You Should try sticking to one thing and focus on that!” I Told Him Why Would I stop? He Said “I’ve never seen someone become successful off multiple things at once “ I responded with “YET” Pioneers Don’t wonder how things are done, They just do them and get better as they go!! I am a creative I don’t thrive off restriction and the past!!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My First Love Is and Will Always Be Music as far as my passions. Music has helped me ever since I was young through my childhood hardships. It has become my outlet for life as I’ve learned and grown to know it always listens.I’ve also taught myself how to cook which I’ve learned from my parents and grandparents. I’ve elevated my skills every year and in time I started my catering business. I’ve always made food for people and I found comfort in the reciprocation of how my food makes people feel. I started working on branding my work to fuse both my music and my food. I’m the Chef in both aspects with my slogan being Food For Pretty Girls & Playas!! Making merch and using it as my logo!! I do catering events and pop up events sometimes changing the menu to fit the event. We Did Detroit Style pizzas for a J Dilla event. I don’t like being in a box with my creations!! Don’t tell me I can’t rap like this or cook like that!! I can do Anything!! The only thing that can stop me is me!! I’m adaptive in my nature I’m used to struggle it’s made me who I am and it never broke me. I just dropped an album The PURPLE Album and it’s a great work of art but I just turned the stove on, I’m not even warmed up yet!! The Thing that makes me the most proud and happy is inspiring my kids!! Letting them know they will be better than me and they can do absolutely anything their heart desires in this world or beyond!! Them singing my songs or bopping their heads or helping me In the kitchen!! I’m Not Just A Mexican Kid out of Fresno, I’m HIM!!
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I actually have a few, I had planned a huge pop up brunch event with a few other big names in my city. We had marketed the event very well, great flyer, great menu and built up anticipation for it!! The Morning comes and we get to the venue and everything was taped off from a double homicide!! We couldn’t use the venue for the whole day because the area was going to be investigated all day. We couldn’t change venues last minute so we had to postpone another week to do the event!! The Next Weekend it was 117 degrees !! We Still Showed up and so did the people!! Another Time recently I planned an album release show, the venue canceled on me to put a touring artist on my date 10 days before the show. I had to find a new venue and reschedule another month out after shooting promo and flyers for a month already. I had to contact all the people involved to make sure they can make the new date!! It ended up working out despite more adversity thrown my way!! If something is going right then I don’t feel like it’s real and I’m used to the struggle. If it were easy everyone would be doing it!!
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
There is no how to on being a creative. Also please stop trying to tell your creative individual friends how to do something especially if you are not a creative yourself!! Your opinion is not everyone’s opinion. Everyone’s process is different, as creatives we do things based off energy, emotions and perspective.
