Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Marsha Marshall. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Marsha, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Is your team able to work remotely? If so, how have you made it work? What, if any, have been the pitfalls? What have been the non-obvious benefits?
The beautiful thing about our line of work is that it can be done from anywhere as long as WiFi and a computer is available. Working remotely has been an added plus for us because we have an opportunity to work with organizations anywhere in the world. Since 2016, we have provided grants and evaluation services to nonprofits and agencies not only in our home state of Georgia, but throughout the US.
Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, M&MNPC provided services in person at a physical office/co-working space location in Macon, GA. However, to adjust to social distancing guidelines and to meet the needs of clients in locations outside of Middle Georgia, M&MNPC transitioned to a 100% virtual business. This transition allowed us to expand our team and meet the nonprofit development needs of organizations near and far. Additionally, working remotely allowed us to take traditional in person services, such as focus groups and qualitative interviews, and perfect them in the virtual setting.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
We are a husband and wife team who established M&MNPC in metro Atlanta in 2014. The business was founded as a response to the many requests individuals had about grant funding for nonprofits. Marsha began her nonprofit journey with program development and community outreach, but later gained experience in grant reviewing and writing. Since 2013, she has provided consultations and advice to several individuals who have expressed interest in getting grant funding for new and smaller nonprofits. Motiere, initially providing financial management on an as-needed basis, but now serves as a Financial Consultant to M&MNPC clients providing grants management and compliance as well as nonprofit filing.
We are most proud of the work and impact our clients have on their communities. We have been fortunate to meet and work with some phenomenal organizations in several areas including education, health and health equity, disabilities, housing and shelter, youth programs ,and so much more. It is amazing to see what these organizations have bee able to do with limited funding. So it’s definitely fulfilling to help these same organizations receive grant funding to increase their impact even more.
I believe what sets us apart is that we don’t just do the work, but we educate our clients on how to remain sustainable as nonprofits. There is a famous quote that says, “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man how to fish and you feed him for his lifetime.” Our job is to not just do write grants or conduct evaluations, but it is also our job to educate and equip our clients on how to use these resources to remain sustainable for years to come.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Honestly, the best source of new clients is “word of mouth” or referrals. A majority (80%) of our current clients have stemmed from ‘a friend telling a friend’ about us. We often have friends and family tell us, “I know someone who is looking for grant funding” or “Someone needs help starting a nonprofit”. We have always been receptive to meeting with referrals and seeing if we can provide the services to best meet their needs. So far, referrals have helped us to maintain a steady client base and we are definitely grateful to everyone promotes our business.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
Yeah, funny story…. So the co-founder of M&MNPC is my husband. So he is the other Marshall of Marshall & Marshall Nonprofit Consulting. We actually went to the same high school, took some classes together, played in the marching band, and had the same group of friends, but never really talked to each other, lol. It wasn’t until we were in college (at two different schools) when were “introduced” to each other by a mutual friend in 2004. We’ve been kind of joined at the hip since then. It was in 2015, after having our second child, I wanted to leave my traditional job (because of burnout) and focus on consulting. Although, he was initially nervous about the transition, he was very supportive. Marshall & Marshall Nonprofit Consulting because a full time business and the rest is history.
