We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Marsha Harris. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Marsha below.
Alright, Marsha thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Going back to the beginning – how did you come up with the idea in the first place?
When people ask me how I got started with Dope Pieces, I always start off by saying, “I was born this way.” Growing up what others would deem weird or corky pieces of fabric and fashion is what stood out to me. I never liked anything in its original state. I always found a way to dress things up or make them my own pieces. I was dope in my own way. Eventually, I paid more attention to the award shows, the glam, the big dresses, and the “weird” gowns that were created and became inspired.
Coming up with the line of services started with me thrifting and specifically tailoring fabrics and clothing together for myself. People, everywhere I’d go, would walk up to me asking me where I had purchased my items from. To their surprise, my response was always, “I made it.” Soon after experiencing this, much more than usual, I began, as a side hustle, piecing things together for friends. This side hustle turned into a beautiful well-loved craft, therapy session, and business for myself.
After much time of going back and forth on the idea, I eventually launched Dope Pieces by Marsha Harris.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m originally from the U.S. Virgin Islands where I was born and raised until the age 16. The customs in the islands and the states were different. The amount of freedom here in the states was different along with the expenses compared to the islands. However, my aunt along with myself and siblings eventually learned to adapt.
Fashion was something that I clung to. Again, I was the one child out of the bunch that loved the out of the box fabrics and designs. My side hustle has increased the people that I network with and have styled for various business and personal photo shoots. With Dope Pieces by Marsha Harris, I wardrobe shop and style clients, create unique design pieces, as well as offer photo shoot assistance. Making it easier for clients to think of me as a one-stop shop, they have the advantage of having both a stylist and personal fashion assistant.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect for me as a creative honestly is the look on my clients’ faces when I produce their vision, or bring their vision to life. Not only that, but being able to create pieces that will not be found elsewhere in boutiques or stores shows the authenticity and individuality of the people I connect and do business with.

How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
Keeping in touch with clients through social media has been effective and a way that has kept Dope Pieces’ presence alive. Consistently making content has been another factor of the interaction and engagement with my clients. However, building an email campaign has been a goal due to the constant discussions of social media platforms being banned or the constant outages that occur with them.
