Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Marsh Delcid . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Marsh, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I’ve always wanted to design clothes and style them. As a child I used to play with Barbie’s and would spend so much time picking outfits/accessories. I wouldn’t even really play with them. I would just admire the outfit I chose and think about what type of life she would have.
I have up on being creative as I got older. I looked at it as more of a silly hobby. I went to college and earned my degrees and went forward in life. I let my creativity come out little by little over the years. It wasn’t until the 2020 lockdown that I decided I could make my sewing into a career. I started making face masks for people, then hats, then little bags. It just grew from there.
Marsh, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I started working retail when I was in college around 2009. I got promoted into a visual merchandiser during my later years and that’s when my love for style and fashion reignited. I learned the ins and outs of sales, colors stories, styling, and planning. I would later become a visual director of many stores I worked at. During this time I also took up sewing as a mild hobby. I wanted to create my own clothes and used my job as a source of inspiration. I went to the school of youtube, and got better at sewing.
I want my work to be known for its quality, but also its impact on the environmental fashion space. I make my clothes using repurposed and vintage materials as a way to lessen my environmental footprint, but I also use them to reignite interest in forgotten items. I see so much beauty in thrown out items, and am constantly thinking of ways to reinvent or revive them. This aspect of my designs are important, but I also strive to create silhouettes that are strong in style and tailoring. I still have so much to learn and I don’t think there will ever be a ceiling for me. I always want to combine new and old, and think of ways to do that.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I love when people wear my work and smile. There is nothing more rewarding to me. I spend hours doing what I do and to see another human appreciate it is everything to me. Getting that sense of validation from your ideas and hard work is a truly one of a kind feeling.
Have you ever had to pivot?
The hardest part of trying to run your own business are the ups and downs. I’ve had to get second jobs to help support my business or let down some collaborations to focus on my own work. Its important to be resilient and not fold under the pressure. Most business are not made overnight, and require years of hard work.
