We were lucky to catch up with Marsalis Carlos recently and have shared our conversation below.
Marsalis , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
Starting my Neuro Space Journey is and was the biggest risk iv taken in my life. I quit my comfortable, good paying job so that i could take on the unknown world of mental wellness. This was a huge risk because i had to take a huge income loss as well as find something to pay the bills. I found myself with 4 jobs; Working for a non profit, tumble coach, mental health para professional and CEO of my own business. All 4 jobs id never done before however it was leading me towards the path i have now and wanted the most. Most things for Neuro space has been a risk, with no sponsors and being unknown in this business i jumped into the community event pool and never looked back. Every day i choose to love on people instead of treating them like the world treats me is the biggest risk i am willing to take.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Whats up new misfits, names Mars and i enjoy bringing people together in unique ways, while teaching them about how to enjoy and understand themself. I got into the mental wellness field because i am a human that feels and understands that everybody has their own 24/7 they have to live and endure. Understanding this coupled with my ability to create safe spaces have allowed me to give love where ever i can. I host community events, support groups, panel discussions and much more. Before i believed my community events were the thing i was most proud of, however over time iv come to see that my self created affirmation cards are just as powerful and are passed out with love and a smile.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Often times when you provide space for people to heal, they would like ideas and advice sure. However iv come to understand that the most important thing people in mental wellness need is someone to listen. The lesson i had to unlearn was whatever you have to say is not always the solution to their problem sometimes its your ears that are the solution.
Back story
I was hosting one of my black men support groups, i noticed i spoke a lot the last session so i decided that i would take a backseat and just listen for most of this session instead of talking and sharing my experience. I was able to listen and provide better communitive points for the people involved. I felt like a more effective helper when i allowed them to tell me what they needed.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Id say the most effective strategy for growing my followers is passing out my affirmation cards at any event i go too. This is because people not only get to feel good when they pick one of them and read what it says, but they also get to see me for who i am and the person behind Neuro Space. Most people say they understand a little more about neurospace when they actually get to meet me and see what i do in person.
