We were lucky to catch up with Marsadie Brown recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Marsadie, thanks for joining us today. Do you have any thoughts about how to create a more inclusive workplace?
My advice I can give on creating a more inclusive workplace, is offering your clients a space that feels safe & relaxing. People want to come to a space where they do not have to be on edge but more so a space that feels like a therapy session. By obtaining this, keep your space bright, with soft warming colors on your walls, furniture and inviting music. Have complimentary snacks & drinks in your workspace. To give people an inviting atmosphere. You never know some people may be leaving straight from work. To come to you. I remember a time when I didn’t work in an inviting workspace & at that time I was attracting clients who liked my professionalism but my atmosphere wasn’t a vibe. So I wasn’t attracting loyal clients, this is when I knew it was time to provide an inclusive workspace
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
So normally when people ask me how long have I been doing nails, I typically say professionally for 5 years but I’ve 10 years experience. And, my reasoning behind this is because I truthfully been doing nails since the age of 13 years old. My auntie she was a diabetic & so my auntie always used to say to me “you always digging in your feet come & do mine” & so my auntie basically trained me to do her feet to the point where I would not hurt her or make her bleed. And, the reasoning my aunt wanted me to do was because so she could stop going to the nail shops because they would hurt her and make her bleed and as a diabetic bleeding out can make or break your health. Going further I began doing my own natural nails in high school & I remember people always asking me or not believing me on doing my own nail creations. I always been artistic art class in high school was one of my favorites.
Moving forward, after high school I went to college gained my bachelors degree in sociology with a gender studies certificate. Midway through my college career I knew that I didn’t want to use my degree. I graduated college In May of 2019. That fall of 2019 I enrolled into Diva’s unlimited academy where I obtained my manicurist coursework clock hours. Then, graduating as a manicurist in January of 2020.
Since then I’ve been a nail technician. I took a break for two years later in 2020 when I found out I was pregnant with my first child a baby boy. I began back working in February of 2022 & since then my nail career has been continuing to escalate upwards.
Overall when dealing with my clients I promote natural nail health. My popular services are overlays and Gel pedicures. Both of these services provide a natural look. Makes my clients feel so warm & happy knowing they gotten a service that gives the appearance of a natural feel. This is what I feel set me apart from others because I am passionate about my craft & it shows in my work ethic. I always aim to give the most natural appearance that is shaped specifically to that client. Plus I take care of the natural nail underneath the enhancements.
This what makes me proud, health & educating my clients on proper nail health & how to maintain their nail enhancements in between services. If you are in the Saint Louis, Mo area swing my way :). You will definitely gain an experience that will keep you coming back.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to learn and unlearn is that everyone isn’t a client, some people are just a customer. With that said you have to learn to set boundaries for yourself and your business. Keep everything professional & keep it strictly business.
People will take your kindness for a weakness. When working solo as an entrepreneur people feel that, they are entitled to your services at any given time. This, is why setting policies for your business is important, if you don’t you will attract a crowd of clientele that isn’t really your niche.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I began building my audience by posting just regular nail pictures and videos. And, majorily I seen a difference when I started creating reels and doing voice overs. A lot of people have told me they love my voice and doing voice overs on top of my reels gives potential clients a glimpse of my personality. I will say whatever u decide to do on social media to show off your niche STAY CONSISTENT. Being consistent is super key! If you are not consistent you might as well hang up your social media platform. And I know this personally because being consistent on social media is something that I lack with. Being consistent is going to bring you to an entire different level.
