We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Mars Rodriguez. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Mars below.
Mars , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
“Take the chance to make a choice to make a change”- I like to remember that on a daily basis, how to be more courageous, curious about things. I think naturally, as an artist I gravitate towards things that are new, fresh, freaky… and in order to find those things, you need to keep changing and trying this and that. I know is good sign to feel a lil scared to do something big because that’s the only way to evolve .
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I was always surrounded by music and arts, my dad, grandfather, brothers and sister play music, my grandmother is a painter. I was always a music lover since a very young age, I remember listening to my dad’s CDs and cassettes collection, he had all kinds of music, a lot of latin music …but i never thought of being a musician or even producing my music. Before music, I was a dancer .
Started playing in bands when I was 14 and since then I haven’t stopped performing. As time went by, I started writing songs and started making demos.
The Mars Rodriguez project, started few months before moving unexpectedly to the US. All I had was my bag with few clothes, my pedalboard and a guitar, I think this was the beginning of my minimalistic / nomad phase , I don’t have many possessions…… anyways, back to the point, i lived in Atlanta for a bit, then went to LA and ended up staying there by mistake.
During all that transitional period Atlanta- LA , I was learning production by myself, just playing around with stuff and trying this and that, how to rec stuff and all that jazz… Then, 2019, started playing shows in LA, released my 1st EP during the pandemic, self produced, engineered and performed in a small studio and the rest is history hahah..
Currently, finishing mastering my debut album, is coming pretty soon .
Besides music, I also started making art prints and getting more involved in video making and editing.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
The biggest purpose of everything I’m doing is FREEDOM and CONNECTION with others.
Freedom to create anything I want to try and play, it begins with a state of mind, self concept, feeling deserving to do something because you feel excited, passionate about it… creativity is a way of operating, is a lifestyle . When you feel free to create without judgement you feel empowered , you become unstoppable. you are living life like a child .
Connecting with others is another thing i feel is deeply related to my purpose. I feel I have this ongoing theme of transmuting struggle into power, there is a big theme of empowerment coming from a real place, from the soul and when we create something honest it automatically connects with others, even if you don’t understand the language, you feel something. Music is a vibration, music is energy.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
I watched documentaries and read some biographies from my music heroes and is just inspiring and also eye opening how the journey of becoming something looks like, the things people go through. For me the story behind the artist is everything. Also, lately, a term I’ve been deeply resonating with Surrealist automatism which is making art based on how you feel, not overthinking, just creating whatever feels right.
