We recently connected with Mars Attax! and have shared our conversation below.
Mars, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I’ve always had the performer bone in me. As a kid I’d join every dance battle and talent show that came my way. I suppose it’s both the thrill and having something that feels like a consistent return to self that makes performance art so necessary to me.
I started technique classes recreationally throughout my school career. There was hip hop, tap, jazz, and then burlesque classes once I had made the career decision in my 20s.
I don’t think there’s necessarily a need to speed any of the learning process. There’s never ending learning and building when it comes to growing as a performer. I’ve learned to not force myself into projects or levels I’m not ready for. The real key is consistency.
The skills I lean into the most with my performances come down to raw confidence and trusting my choices. For me that takes form in things like eye contact, smirking after a trick, and milking the tease. It’s already so powerful to be using your existence as art, why not bask in it?
The only obstacle as of recent has been making the scary jump from the day job to full time artist. It can feel a little ridiculous to leave safe income for a “dream”.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Mars Attax! I’ve been a burlesque dancer and producer for 5 years now (soon to be 6).My goal with burlesque has always been to support freedom of choice.
My very first show was self produced (out of desperation haha) in Downtown LA in 2020. It was fabulously tacky and I had my band friends open up for me. It made sense to just keep on producing from there. It’s a great privilege to be able to gather talent and give opportunity to those who share a dream. I’ve made so many friends in the community and the continuous uplifting is the entire point of the beautiful dance.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Being my own boss and honoring my inner child’s desires. There are just some things you know you’re meant to do.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
There’s a very deep need for me to continue to prove to myself there is no limit. Everything is an opportunity and I can’t imagine getting this far to throw in the towel. I want to teach and always learn more self love.
