We recently connected with Marrha Roussopoulos and have shared our conversation below.
Marrha, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
My parents are incredible people.
What they did right was they led by example and worked their tails off to make an incredible life for our family.
My Dad Paul is an inventor and gives amazing logical advice. He has worked since he was a kid and probably will never stop working, he is an entrepreneur and can learn how to do anything. He is a lifelong learner and if he sees a problem with a product, he will find a way to make it better. As a kid I watched him create all sorts of cool products and fix everything around our home. He doesn’t back down from a challenge and his determination is incredible to me. He taught me that I can learn how to do anything, with a little time and determination.
My Mom Lisa is an artist and the most thoughtful person I know. She always supports my ideas and tries to find ways to help me in every way she can. She supported me in my decision to go to cosmetology school and let me try all sorts of hairstyles on her and even give her a perm! She also is a lifelong learner and always find beauty in the world around her. From my Mom I have learned how to slow down and absorb a moment in time. I’ve never met anyone else in my life that will literally stop to smell the roses, but she does. She sees the world like an artist does. She recognizes small details in things that most people overlook, and I love that.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I got into the hair industry in the early 2000’s and have been practicing my craft for 23 years. In my opinion it’s the best career in the world! You get to talk all day, meet cool people and make other people feel good about themselves. You get to make someone’s day brighter and lift others up, it’s awesome! You also get to be creative and artistic as well.
The services I provide are mostly hair colors I am really good with Blondes, and I also specialize in Vivid Rainbow hair color.
I am most proud of opening my own salon Raven and Rose Beauty Parlour. I have always loved vintage design and my salon is very Vintage influenced. It was a complete labor of love and everyone in my family helped. I have been self-employed for the last few years of my career and this will be an amazing opportunity for me to expand my reach to other creative stylist and clients. I truly believe in a supportive environment where everyone is valued and seen for their unique talents. I love learning new techniques and everyone has something they are great at and can contribute! When everyone works together and supports each other it is a beautiful environment to work in and for clients to visit.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
One of the lessons I had to unlearn was “Always double book when you can for appointments because you will make more money”. For those who are not familiar an example would be If you have a hair color client you would also take a haircut client while that persons hair color is sitting on.
I do not double book anymore and haven’t for about 5 years now. It allows me to be more present with my clients and provide them with great service and focus. Also it allows me to be flexible and if they want to change up their style or hair color completely it leaves me more time to do something extra if they want to. I find that it benefits them and me equally. They get amazing service and I get to focus on my craft and not feel rushed onto the next thing. People are paying for my time and skill and I think it is important to make sure they are getting my full attention.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
My social media started slow. When I first started, I posted about specials I was running, price lists and openings I had available. But once I started posting before and after photos of my work my account grew a lot quicker. If a picture is worth a 1000 words, then a video is worth 10,000. All my videos and photos are the same shots and format, just different people. Once you find what works for you just repeat it over and over again. Learn from other accounts that have a lot of followers, check out what they are doing and basically do the same thing with your own work and a personal twist to you.
My biggest piece of advice is when people like or comment on your posts make sure to respond to the comment in a positive way, I do a lot of heart emojis or go follow the account that liked your post.
Social Media in the Hair world is very important. Learning how to take good pictures and video are also important. The interactions you have with others is the key to bringing it all together. Make sure to engage with your followers and talk with them in the digital space. Just like your clients in real life, these are real people, and you need to build these friendships just like you do in your daily life.
