We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Marra P. a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Marra, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you take us back in time to the first dollar you earned as a creative – how did it happen? What’s the story?
The first dollar you earn is exciting as a Creative. The first time I generated revenue/sold a major piece of work was back in 2019. In the beginning, I was just painting to paint, and I would have people always ask me, “This is you? You did this”, and I would always shyly reply yes. One night I was at an in house kickback exhibit with some other Creatives, with some of my pieces displayed on the wall (such a fun/great night). Enjoying myself with some friends and acquaintances, I got a random phone call from a buyer in California. I quickly had to sober up and answer some text messages regarding the purchase of my Oblina piece (the 90’s babies should know). This was one of the best feelings ever, I made rent in 20 minutes.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
First and foremost, My name is Rhamara but I go by Marra P. / Marra Vibes. I am a Visual Artist/Doodler.
I started doodling (as I would call it) when I was about six. I doodled on my Dad’s check with a Sharpie, and that is when it all began. Ever since I have always dipped in and out of drawing. I used to rip up old clothes, draw, etc., but drawing was always the one thing that stuck with me. Just like everyone else, life pulls you in many directions, but I always found pure happiness in my art.
I would not really say that I specialize in one area – I like to dive into everything if I can. I feel like what sets me apart from others is my wide variety of creativity and how my art brings you into a World – MY WORLD.
What I am most proud of is that I stay true to myself and do not follow the trends, the charity event I was a part of and the two major events I was able to be a part of (Artini & A Spectacular Black Girl Art Show).
The main thing I want potential clients to know is that if you can think of it, I can create it !
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being a Creative is putting a smile on clients’ faces when they receive their finished pieces. It is so rewarding.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
A journey that illustrates my resilience is my everlasting journey with depression, anxiety, and life. It definitely has not been a smooth road. From the age of 16, things have been rather rocky (unstable living situations, horrible off and on relationships with friends/family, trying to balance a full-time job, and going to school full-time). Also, dealing with anxiety and depression. It was no easy road, but it definitely made me work harder and made me cherish life and all the things that come with it. It is still a battle but I know that I was put here to create, so that is what I will do!
