We were lucky to catch up with Marqus Anthony recently and have shared our conversation below.
Marqus , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The most meaningful album I’ve worked on was probably my first one, Walking By My Faith by Marqus Anthony. I started writing this album after becoming a Christian. I grew up as an atheist and went on to become a scientist but God changed my life and revealed the truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ to me. I began writing this album with a pencil and notebook without any beats! It was just me and God. A lot of this album is direct quotes from the Bible. While I grew a lot artistically over the years, my debut was my most anointed project. I thank God for that special time in my life.

Marqus , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Marqus Anthony is not your average rapper. He delivers the truth of Jesus Christ in his clean rhymes. Marqus grew up a hip hop head who one day was saved by Jesus. After 22 years of not rapping himself, the Lord graced Marqus and gifted him with this talent to spread the gospel! Now 33 years old, Marqus continues the mission he has been on, in his hometown of Detroit, MI. Striving to build true community and bringing people together are at the center of his ministry.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding part of my creative journey is always the messages I get from listeners. Every time I’m ready to give it up, someone tells my how my music has impacted their life. I thank God for the grace to press on!

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I’m a 33 year old rapper who works a day job. I can’t count the number of times I’ve wanted quit for the past 11 years. If I wasn’t truly called to this lane I would have quit a long time ago. Being a Christian rapper is something you do for over a decade because you love God and for the love of the game. Because while it’s a growing genre, there are few people who make a full time living doing it long term. I missed out on so many opportunities that I prayed for daily. I’ve been disappointed my songs haven’t gone viral or hit any big playlists. But at the end of the day, I do this for the people who are paying attention. My supporters are amazing and if wasn’t for yall I definitely would have been quit. I’m excited for what’s next as we continue hosting monthly events in Southwest Detroit with Fourth Fridays at Santos Church
