We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Marquita Sutton a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Marquita, thanks for joining us today. Coming up with the idea is so exciting, but then comes the hard part – executing. Too often the media ignores the execution part and goes from idea to success, skipping over the nitty, gritty details of executing in the early days. We think that’s a disservice both to the entrepreneurs who built something amazing as well as the public who isn’t getting a realistic picture of what it takes to succeed. So, we’d really appreciate if you could open up about your execution story – how did you go from idea to execution?
Versatile Management/ Versatile Music Group was birthed through a vision and a dream at the age of 8. Ever since I was 8 years old I always had the desire the passion the drive to be a business owner, especially in the entertainment business. One day at the age of 10 it was spiritually given to me about the name of my business. I never let go of the vision I never let go of the dream. So as I got older trials and tribulations came, along with hard times, ups, downs, turn arounds, good, bad and all that you can think of. But during this particular time or rough patch I should say in my life, the birth of the vision that God gave me, came to life!! God put me in a position to find my first client (Vineice) who has the same drive, and the same passion as I do. We started working at the same marketing company together, and one day we began to talk about our passion for music and the entertainment business. From there we had a discussion and a meeting about her wanting me to be her manager to help jump start her career. And so Vineice wrote a song, her first Single “Kiss” and recorded it, brought it to work the next day. Vineice asked me to listen to it, I immediately thought the song was phenomenal and instantly said we need to get this into the studio and record this professionally and start the process of marketing you to the public. We went to a local studio in Raleigh North Carolina (Sky High Studios; owner Alston Tyler) where Vineice recorded the single “Kiss”. We both fell in love with the song!! The song became our baby, it was the first single that was produced, promoted and marketed under The Versatile Management imprint. From there people began to notice the work that Vineice and I had put into the single. So we began to get inquiries on how we could help different people in different venues of business market, and promote their businesses. From there we picked up 6 business clients and 2 other music artists. And from there the story began, and the book is still being written!!!!

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I got into this business by the love and passion for music and the entertainment business. I grew up in the church very close to my pastor at the time and his wife and their family. I had the opportunity to experience and see a little bit of how it works with the music business, ever since then it became a love and passion of mine. 2018 was a rough time for me in my life. But in 2018 was when versatile management was born. I began to work with my first client putting my energy, sweat, brain power into making sure that people knew and know who by clients are. We provide marketing, promotion, business advice, skill set, and development for music artists and business clients. We do this based off of the need of the client and the budget that is available by the client. We put our best foot forward to make sure you’re seen, and you’re heard by everyone. We take pride in honesty and transparency with who we are and what we do.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The best source of new clients for us is the proven work that’s being seen by the public. Being that we do a lot of marketing and promotion people see us and recognize the hard work and professionalism that is put into what we do. With that, people automatically are drawn to wanting help from versatile management versatile music group. So we always say; stay seen to the public, display professional work, display clean work, and people will always be drawn to you.

Any advice for managing a team?
The best advice that we can give for managing a team is, to always have fun and always be transparent and honest. Also be open-minded to everyone’s ideas. Make sure that you’re listening to your clients their needs and their ideas. Never try to override their vision and their dreams, but try to make the both of them work together; your dreams, your goals their dreams their goals.
