Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Marquita Livingston. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Marquita , thanks for joining us today. Can you tell us a bit about who your hero is and the influence they’ve had on you?
My hero is my dad. Yeah I know that sounds cliche, because you hear so many people talk about their heroes being their parents, but that’s one of the first people to make an imprint on your life. I mean who else do you have to look up to as a child? The one that’s right there with you making a difference.
My dad was a single father until he married my stepmom. Many hear of single moms, but my dad did it all! He dressed me the best way he could, did my hair and made sure he was present! Now I didn’t say I always looked like a cute little girl, lol but I was always fresh and clean.
This man is the reason why I am so business minded today! He taught me about finances at a young age. Balancing a checkbook, paying bills and to keep moving forward no matter what! His favorite saying was “if you going do something, do it right.” And that saying is what pushes me to be my best at everything I do! Or at least try my best!
My father taught me to stand for what I believe in and to hold my head high. He taught me how to stand on my own two feet and be independent. But most importantly he showed me what marriage should look like. And although I wasn’t the best daughter, my father never gave up on me. He is my hero because he tried his best to be his best. And even if he fell short at times, he never claimed to be perfect! Lol
Marquita , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I started writing when I was a young girl. Couldn’t get me to sit down and read a book but I would write poems to express how I was feeling. And oh so many emotions as a child. So to mask my pain I would write until it went away. And then poems turned into short stories and from there it was endless where my mind would take me.
I started thinking of a brand. A place for my fans to hear and see all that comes to mind. From books to natural skincare products, I wanted people to see that you can do whatever you put your mind to. No matter how crazy you think it maybe. And so Samiramarquita was born!
What sets me apart from others is that I’m not giving up! You will not be able to tell me NO and think that’s just going to be it! If it has been done before, then Marquita can do it! That motivates me to learn, have patience and keep going.
What I am most proud of is my willingness to learn. If you would have told me that I would be this person now, back then, I would not have believed you. My enthusiasm for learning is what I am most proud of.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding part being creative is the appreciation I get from people that are listening to me. The support that I get from people who don’t know me! It’s the best feeling in the world when you know that you have impacted someone’s life in a good way. It keeps you in a such a humbling place that makes you appreciate life and love.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
One thing I wish I would have known earlier would be about grants to get started. I didn’t know that there were so many places that will help you start your business. I wish I would have been able to take advantage of those great opportunities then, before spending a lot of my own money.
