Getting a business off the ground is hard enough! So many things you have to learn. Marketing, promoting, being consistent. None of those things scared me because I love to learn so I figured that would be easy right? Well, not as easy as I thought. And with all the work I was putting in and the learning that I was doing, I still wasn’t getting the customers that I wanted. Or at least not for my skincare line. Which left me feeling a bit discouraged, but I knew I had to think outside the box. Get out of my comfort zone and keep pushing! So I did just that!

On this particular day, I saw a TikTok post from a woman that I was following and she was talking about having acne and how she tried everything but nothing was working. And I could remember being in her shoes. All the products I tried. All the money I threw away trying new products that just wasn’t working for me. But the most important memory was the way it left me feeling. Feeling like there was no hope! Like I would have to live with these bumps and dark spots forever! Just frustrating! So I could understand her frustration. But I wanted her to know I had a product that worked! That helped remove my acne and rebuild my self confidence! Only problem was, how do I get her to try it? She didn’t know me. She was just someone I was following right? Not exactly.

I decided to comment on the post. Shoot my shot! I explained that I had the same issues and that I had a product I believed would help. She was interested!

We started chatting through TikTok and I explained that her cousin is a client of my husband’s. I told this young lady her name and everything. Only for her to tell me that she had no idea who my husband’s client was. That she was not her cousin! I was beyond confused because my husband’s client is why I started following this young lady in the first place! I mean everything she said was right! This young lady made jackets and was an entrepreneur. But they never met! We both were in aww! But laughed it off and keep chatting.

We then exchanged numbers and started texting. The very first text from her was my name is Marquita! I thought I was losing it as I’m reading the text cause we can’t have the same name! Like what’s the odds of that right? And Marquita at that? I said is that your real name, she said yes and I said well that’s my name also! I spell it and pronounce it the same way! At that moment we both couldn’t believe it! It seemed like such a coincidence. But I think it broke the ice and made both sides trust a bit more. Like it was ordained. Lol

A few days later I dropped off a sample care package of all my skincare products at the time. Funny, she actually lived about 15 minutes away from also! I told her it would be free! I only asked that she post a review. She was thrilled and agreed.

It was in that moment I gained my very first client! I got outside my comfort zone. And she posted a video review!! Now with her hair care products, I am returning the same favor!

When I first started my business there was so much going on. I had just gotten married, we found out we were expecting, new business started and I was in a good space. Not a lot of money but hey who has a lot of money starting a small business right?

About 7 months after paying for all the paperwork, you would think being on cloud 9 from launching my new business would be all I could do right? Not exactly.

A few weeks after finding out we were expecting, we found out it was an ectopic pregnancy. Which was devastating! It also took all my attention off of my business to focus on my health. Which would be expected but I didn’t consider the emotional toll that it would have. The runs every other day to get blood work drawn. Not be able to move because I was 10 weeks and it could burst. I didn’t consider the sleepless nights and how drained I would be.

I also didn’t consider the praying I was doing with my husband and my doctor. The painless days God gave me because he just that good. I walked around with no pain for almost 12 weeks of an ectopic pregnancy! I didn’t consider the love that I received from family and friends. I didn’t consider the resilience that God gave me before because he knew would help me through this!

I knew then that I had to keep pushing! To finish what I started! I couldn’t move but I could work on things that required me to sit. And that’s what got me through.

A lesson that I had to unlearn was “it has to be perfect to get started”. I believe it can never have the chance to be perfect if it’s never started!

I tried to make sure my business was PERFECT before I launched. I mean I had to have everything the way it would be if I was running a Fortune 500 company from start! All you have to do is just start! It will never be perfect! Not a perfect time, perfect money, perfect anything! Just start!
