We recently connected with Marquita Butler and have shared our conversation below.
Marquita, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
I have been a registered nurse for 16 years and my most defining moments became when I was working in the intensive care units. I have seen death, near death and complicated situations numerous times. My very first death of a patient was a young 24-year-old woman that had a baby 8 days prior to her death. She developed what is called postpartum cardiomyopathy, the heart begins to fail after giving birth. It was the same age I had my first child and to know that this child would never know his mother was heartbreaking. As years went on, you develop a certain numbness but there are always certain cases that touch your feelings and emotions deeply. The years continued to progress, and I realized that there is no debriefing for the nurses. I was being affected mentally, physically and emotionally. I was wearing down for years of putting myself on the line for survival of the patients. I took almost a year off of work and boy was it a sacrifice, but I needed to mentally recover. My husband and I had already started our own personal fitness facility/gym, so I concentrated on my personal journey, mentally and physically recovering from the years of despair. I then began to review how precious life is and how it can literally be taken away in a blink of an eye. One minute everything seems as if it is going so well, then boom tragedy can hit. I started to cherish each moment and live in the moment. Not worrying about yesterday or tomorrow but to be present at all times. I went on a personal journey of recovering mentally, physically and emotionally. I even wrote a book about it called “THE REMEDY: My guide to greatness.” I went back to work refreshed and with a better attitude. Nursing is part of my ministry to help others and watch miracles happen right before my eyes.
Marquita, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

(Nursing was recommended to me by one of my aunts who was an experienced nurse. Her daughter and I were in college today and joined the nursing community. When I realized that I had a passion for helping others and I wanted to focus on prevention of health diseases and disorders. That’s what I am most proud of we are being proactive about health and wellness.)
We’d love to hear about you met your business partner.
My first business partner was my husband. We met in college, but I knew he was different than most. He had a certain discipline and morale about himself that was very attractive. He would challenge me in my thinking to push myself beyond my limits. Throughout our 13 years together, we have pushed each other to greatness. He had been a personal trainer for some years and then we wanted his own facility, so we discussed it and said when the opportunity presents itself, we will make the most of it. We had just moved to a new city, so we gave ourselves some time to get adjusted but about a year in the opportunity presented itself and we jumped. Sometimes you just have to leap and trust the process. When I took a year off of my professional job, we were working full time together and it was a pleasant time. It’s a joy to say that we have been business partners for the last 5 years.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I had made a pivot in my career and life. I told you that I took a year off of work which led to me filing for bankruptcy. I almost lost my house and whatever else that I was may seem materialistically valuable. I don’t look at it in a negative way. I looked at it as I had to shed some things to elevate to the next level of greatness that was meant for me. My husband sparked the entrepreneurial spirit in me and then I became a serial entrepreneur. I am glad to say that I am having success. I have had many life lessons, not failures. Everything is a learning experience, and it is all about perspective. You have to elevate your perception. How do you view life events because they are going to come. You can’t avoid them all. It has been an even more overwhelming experience to watch the comeback. When I tell you, I always come out better. You just have to say positive, live in the moment and be grateful for everything, big or small, and I promise you that energy which attract great things. It will welcome success into your life on all aspects.
