We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Marquise Jones a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Marquise, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
Bringing the best of both worlds of DJing and Live music to Weddings and Corporate events. I specialize in DJ – Hybrid entertainment. Performance with a Live DJ and Musicians.
I was Fortunate to be the 1st offer DJ/Sax in Dallas Fort Worth over 5 years ago.
Now I’m excited to Launch a DJ Hybrid company in 2026.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I was born and raised in Arlington and I have been working full time in the music industry for over 12 years. DJing for 8 years. Playing 23 year, I started playing Saxophone in middle school. I never planned to play for a living. I only planned on never stopping. I continued through high school and College. I joined my 1st Band Mix MAGYK in College. Then 2 Band Mates from Mix MAGYK and Started and Band called The Diamond Kings and went full time. At 1st we primarily busked or street performed. The band consisted of Julian Ayacannoo (Now a Music Composer and Producer), Craig Kleiman (Drummer) and myself. We really gained a lot of traction by regularly visiting Austin’s 6the and started doing events from UT’s Greek-life. A few years later I had a thought of doing weddings, on purpose, because they are more consistent. Being a band leader and a full time musician, I’ve done a few weddings at this point. 2015 is when I decided to plant my flag and intentionally offer wedding entertainment. Shortly afterwards I started DJING. Having a band background 1st, I naturally wanted to bridge the gap between DJing and live performers. I Especially Love doing weddings! It’s my goal to be one of the best! So I take this very seriously and I have a lot of fun doing it.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Knowing your roots and being consistent
2020 the world changed. So I had to change with it. Long story short I focused on the positive, what I had and what I can c M.
Don’t get me wrong. I freaked out like everyone else but it was my faith in Jesus Christ that really helped me through. My roots. After some prayer I thought about what I could do and I went back to street performing like the early days and made a decent living during 2020. Looking for opportunities and being a person of that offers to give instead out looking for what I can get out of people was key.
I’m currently living my dream of being a luxury Wedding DJ all because I simply keep going. I was committed to getting better and stacked small victories.
.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
I can’t cheat the game. Be good and get better or the market will eventually expose you. My philosophy is the give more than you expect to receive. That way you can wow and satisfy clients.
With that reputation, your business will grow and so will you b/c your constantly trying to give move value than the client paid for.
