We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Marquise Butcher. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Marquise below.
Alright, Marquise thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I knew I wanted to pursue music professionally when I was 18. When I was 18 that’s when I started to notice that I could write songs pretty quickly and music was always second nature to m when I was growing up. When I was working at Mcdonald’s at that time I would write songs in the back drive thru during my shift cause I was just so motivated to be the best at what I wanted to do. I always loved to sing and was always interested on how music was created on the backend.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Born and raised in St. Louis MO, I was always around music coming up. My family loves music especially the classics. Artist that inspired me coming up was Brian McKnight, The Isley Brothers, Tyrese, Chris Brown, just to name a few. I was always doing talent shows, singing in church, in every arts or music program in school too. I learned to play 6 instruments at the time when I was in high school. Guitar was my top favorite that I still play today. When I was working at Mcdonald’s at the time when I was 18, I started booking my own studio sessions and teaching myself by ear how to properly record and deliver the best type of music I could create. Fast forward to when I graduated high school, I got an opportunity to write music for TV. Adam Hayman, really good friend of mine, he gave me an opportunity to land a spot on a various artist project at the time for Tv/Film company called MADE. My first placement on TV was a Stevie J premier on his commercial. From then on I was given the opportunity to come out with my own projects under MADE and that really sparked a name for myself. My songs were played on Netflix “Too Hot To Handle”, Amazon Prime “Swarm”, MTV “Jersey Shore”, VH1 “Love and Hip-Hop”, and more. While getting these placements , I was also in college getting my masters degree in music from Full Sail University to learn how to mix and record my own material. I graduated in 2021 and moved to Atlanta, GA to continue my music career head on. Now I write for other artist, engineer at various recording studios, and i’m very well connected to the best in the game that I grew up listening to that sparked my inspiration.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The best reward of being a songwriter is when you get that placement you worked really hard to get and the fans love it, it makes you feel really good to know people love your work. When people in the industry see your dope, everyone wants you to be involved and around in what they have goin on. When I get calls from family, friends, and my supporters tell me they heard my song on their favorite TV show, that motivates me to keep delivering the best records. If I can write the best records and make people happy while doing it, that’s a reward within itself.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Absolutely, stay active on social media. Post pics, post videos of you doing what you love, stay active, respond back to your supporters as well. People want to be entertained. If you can keep people entertained then you have their attention. I post 1 minute videos on my instagram of demos I have written and ask my supporters “Who do you hear on this record?”. Make them feel involved on your journey as well through social media. It’s a great machine and it’s one of the most efficient ways to stay relevant.
