We were lucky to catch up with Marquis Mckenzie recently and have shared our conversation below.
Marquis, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Would you say you are more focused on growing revenue or cutting costs? We’d love to hear how you think about these two critical drivers
I think cutting cost in my industry doesn’t solve anything. So I rather focus on growing my revenue.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
The Dirt Master LLC was birthed from a vision and plan I create while incarcerated. I was direct filed and charged as an adult at the age of 15 years old. After serving time in prison and facing many hardships as a returning citizen I had no choice to become an entrepreneur. From being involved within the community, mentoring at-risk youth, organizing with the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition and getting Amendment 4 passed, it wasn’t long before people started to notice my brand (The Dirt Master). What set The Dirt Master apart is that we are a second chance employer and believe in giving others an opportunity. I’m most proud of being able to have added a Reentry Apprenticeship program apart of the business.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Word of month.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
My story is steady building. But I think coming from incarceration and pushing through many hardships to becoming a successful business owner illustrates that your past doesn’t define your future.
