We were lucky to catch up with Marquenia Johnson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Marquenia, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What do you think it takes to be successful?
One of the things that I think it takes to be successful is consistency. In the line of work that I do you have to find a way to stand out because this line of work is becoming over saturated. So my thinking process is with each custom bring some fire to that design. That way when you’re walking in the streets with a pair that i designed I want it to be a conversation starter. I want people to be in awe when they see my custom designs.

Marquenia, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started doing custom shoes seven years ago but the way I got into it was by coincidence. I was scrolling on Facebook and happened to come across a post of someone else doing custom shoes. I then became interested, so I did my research and it took off from there. I want people to know that I will do anything to be able to capture their dreams and put them onto their shoes, and that’s what I pride myself in, being able to create the perfect pair of shoes for my clients. I think what sets me apart from other customizers is my passion and dedication to my craft. When I get a client, I want them to leave with exactly what they envisioned their shoes to look like. I want them to have their dream shoes not just so they can come back to me again, but also because I want them to be able to experience that joy of seeing their dreams come to life.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
What helped me build my reputation is my ability to put myself out there. I love being able to make connections with other people in my market. I also love being able to form connections with clients and being able to build that trust. Which is another reason why I love my craft, I am able to form long lasting bond with other people that also love this craft.

How did you build your audience on social media?
I built my platform by showing people how I do what I do. I didn’t want to just post, I wanted people to be able to learn from my content, so people who are getting started in my craft are able to have guidance. I would advise people who are just getting started in building their presence on social media to post tutorials and do lives. That way people will want to come back so they can learn from you and your experience/knowledge.
