We were lucky to catch up with Marq recently and have shared our conversation below.
Marq, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What sort of legacy are you hoping to build. What do you think people will say about you after you are gone, what do you hope to be remembered for?
My legacy will be about how I managed to be successful, innovative, and dominant in an oversaturated industry where being unconventional isn’t recognized by your peers and those around you. I believe once my journey is complete that people will say I was one of the greatest artists/musicians to ever do this. I want to be remembered for my determination and my chameleon like ability to adapt and adjust to any situation or obstacle.
Marq, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Marquan, but I go by Marq. I feel like the best artists go by some derivative of their birth name and I went through a plethora of aliases before I decided to….JUST BE MYSELF. I’m from Philadelphia, a place that’s culturally intuitive and filled with creative individuals, but also a place where it’s easy to succumb to the perpetual evils that annihilate a person’s good being. That duality is and will forever be a part of who I am and you can hear that in my music. I started writing poetry at a very young age, which then transitioned into cultivating entire pieces of music. I’m proud of the fact that I can share who I truly am through a medium such as music, more so that I can do it at a high level in a variety of ways. I am currently building a brand called Urban Distribution, being from the city I’ve seen a ton of things derail a talented individual. Urban Distribution is a direct parallel to the streets that I come from, but instead of pushing drugs we distribute our art, from music to clothing to gaming to interior/exterior design, whatever it is that you create. I want to help people escape what’s so detrimental to our potential.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
The funds to get my business off the ground came from me working multiple jobs. I have two full-time jobs. I work one job in the morning for 8 hours then another job in the afternoon for 8 to 11 hours and on the weekends I find other work to make a little extra cash to go toward my business as well.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I actually am in the middle of a transition. I used to think being in the music industry was 100 percent creative. It wasn’t until about a year ago that I learned being in the music business meant conducting actual business. So I had to change my method of thinking and the way I moved when it came to my career. I had to learn about marketing, contracts, how to negotiate, understanding leverage. I’m independent so all my funding comes from working, I do all my marketing and promotion myself.
