We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Marlyn Fisher Scott. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Marlyn below.
Alright, Marlyn thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
I have always known I was different, and most of that stems from my parents and my upbringing. I am proud to say that I was raised by two creatives. My mother is a writer, and my father is an actor. One of the best compliments I’ve ever received was after my Acting III final in college, my professor pulled me aside and told me that the reason I will be successful in this world is because of my parents. She was not alluding to narcissism or my parents pulling strings (especially considering they don’t know anyone in LA), but instead because I have the rare gift of my parents unwavering support and overall inspiration. Growing up in a house full of creatives and without cable meant that I was raised on Rogers & Hammerstein, The Marx Brothers, and Peter Sellers’ “Pink Panther”. I dealt with rejection at an early age because every night after dinner I would want to perform, normally an original song or a hit Broadway number, to the point that my mom had to occasionally tell me to go to my room. Ultimately, my love for performing is embedded into the deepest parts of my core, and I would not have this gift if it weren’t for my genetic proclivity for artistic creation, and for that, I am eternally grateful.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Hi there! My name is Marlyn Fisher Scott. I am an actor that originally hails from Richmond, Virginia, and have had the pleasure of working and living in Los Angeles for the past few years. I graduated from Elon University with my BFA in Acting, and managed to graduate and move to LA in May of 2020. Despite the universal struggles of the pandemic, it has been the most fruitful few years of opportunity and overall expansion. I am currently a non union commercial actor, with eventual goals and aspirations to join the union and dive more into TV/Film. However, despite my end goals, I am very grateful to be here doing the things I’ve always wanted to do. It is overwhelming to know that most people in this life can not say they are in the place they want to be doing the things they’ve always wanted to do. I try and remind myself every day how lucky I am. This is truly a gift, and I cannot wait to see what comes next. Ultimately, I think that’s something that sets me apart from the masses…my overwhelming awareness and gratitude for every step of my own journey.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
I think ultimately the best thing we can do as a society is to recognize that there is an artist within all of us. Everything is an art form once you release yourself from the confines of perfection and allow your work to breathe with life, purpose, and direction. Science is an art, cooking is an art, being a mother is an art. If we found this artistic freedom in everything we did, can you imagine the benefit to the overall collective? I can. It’s beautiful. The best thing we can do is to give the gift my parents have given me. To really see each other. To really love each other. To foster and water the parts of each other that love and dream. And as we grow and expand in this life, to bring your people along with you all the way to the top. It’s heaven on earth. Welcome.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Since moving to Los Angeles, I have worked part time as a Production Assistant. Two incredibly important lessons I have learned from him and the people that now run the theatre in his name are this:
1. It is not 1 big break, but lots of little ones.
2. As you rise, bring your people with you.
I will carry these lessons with me always, regardless of where my career and life take me, and that is yet another reason why I feel like the luckiest girl in LA. Very grateful!
