We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Marlisha Applewhite. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Marlisha below.
Marlisha , appreciate you joining us today. Do you feel you or your work has ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized? If so, tell us the story and how/why it happened and if there are any interesting learnings or insights you took from the experience?
Being someone who have felt misunderstood and mischaracterized all her life finally takes a turn around. I struggled with not really knowing who I was or who I needed to be for not only myself but others as well. I struggled with my mental on a daily. Being someone who felt less important or confuse within myself had me on the verge of wanting to just end my whole life. It took really believing in myself, writing and praying to get myself from that dark place. I still had my moments, but I felt deep within me that there was a brighter and bigger picture on the other side of my pain. No one ever would want to be the type of ” Public Figure ” who never seem to get a break from life itself when it comes to how others view you and the feelings of his or her own inner thoughts. I am now someone who stands for more than just my mental. I stand for the way many people may have misunderstood or mischaracterized me from my past and circumstances. I stand for the importance of how MENTAL HEALTH can be a lot when you seem to avoid or hide it from others. I stand for sharing my story around the world to not only help myself grow but be an inspiration for others JUST LIKE ME. I stand for being understand and my character being the character everyone would love to be connected to.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hello Everyone,
I am Marlisha Applewhite raised and born in Memphis, TN. I’m a mother, Author, Content Creator, Mental Health Advocate, Motivational Speaker so basically an all-around entrepreneur. My career path focuses on the importance of mental health while sharing my own testimony of how I battle with Major Bipolar Depression and Anxiety. I created a short film called Cut Deep that can relate to my short autobiography Covered Scars. I created those two projects to not only help me share my story but to bring more awareness to Mental Health the best way I knew how when it came to social media. Being the woman, I am today from where I started has made me so proud. I grew and still grow from my past pain.
I am proud to also say some of my proudest moments would be being able to speak at different schools bringing awareness to younger people Mental Health, being booked for radio and tv interviews as well as magazines. Having opportunities to be on well-known tv shows and movies and being able to travel as much as I wish as a kid. I will never say that some of those moments were easy. I can advise always being determined and creating the path you want for yourself. Never! I mean never allow someone else on earth to write your story for you or see your vison because what is for you ” IS ONLY FOR YOU “!
One thing I would like to end with is that what your purpose is in life from my own experience is not going to be an easy path. I do know that being true to yourself and believing that what is yours is yours! It doesn’t take being in the spotlight to be important or to feel strong when walking in your purpose. Your purpose will never die if it is your and it will definitely take you far. Being someone who see so much unfold is still unbelievable to me because as much as I hope for it, I still doubted it BUT it just made me keep going.
YOU CAN DO IT TOO.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One lesson I had to unlearn was thinking that everyone was for me from beginning to the end. I had to also unlearn my own toxic behavior when it came to having a friend, bonds with family members and of course within me. I never really knew how to take accountability till now and I am still learning how to grow as a becoming WOMAN.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
I know many will struggle to understand my journey because most have not been in my shoes and most rather sadly suffer in silence which could be understandable but not accepting. You will never know who needs to hear someone else’s story. My story is not for everyone, and I am fine with knowing that because there is still a purpose, meaning and message in who I am and what I stand for in my journey.
