We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Marlene Viera. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Marlene below.
Marlene , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
In 2006, my sister had to retire because of the MS. She was young and wanted to stay productive. She learned to design and create costume jewelry. She taught me everything she knew and for many years, it became our hobby. In 2012, I had the opportunity to establish the jewelry line and began to sell the pieces to the public in boutiques and local shops. For me, the development of a small business has been a very slow process. When I started there wasn’t as much help and mentoring for microbusinesses like today in my area. Throughout these years I have seen how the conditions and vision of microentrepreneurs and handmade items have changed.

Marlene , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I studied Public Relations and started creating jewelry as a therapy for my sister. I have experimented with many styles of jewelry, but I think that I have developed my own style. I try to strike a balance between artisanal and elegant, which is very popular with ladies and gentlemen between 24 and 55 years old. They use my pieces to complement their work and daily outfits.

Okay – so how did you figure out the manufacturing part? Did you have prior experience?
Over the years, I have improved the quality of the materials so that my pieces have more durability. I read a lot on the internet about different materials, how they are made, their distribution, etc. I write to different suppliers and test the materials. I still haven’t gotten to where I want to be, but I do keep improving.
Can you talk to us about manufacturing? How’d you figure it all out? We’d love to hear the story.
I like to be honest with clients. I talk to them about my materials, how they should take care of them and how long they should last. This interaction allows me to establish a connection with them and they know they can contact me at any time.
