We were lucky to catch up with Marlee Rosen recently and have shared our conversation below.
Marlee , appreciate you joining us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
When I decided to get serious about my own personal style almost 10 years ago, I fell prey to trends, greenwashing, and my own negative feelings about my body. But through this process I developed an amazing toolkit of strategies that have led me to build a closet I truly love.
In slow fashion facebook groups and on instagram posts, I saw folks falling into the same traps that I did over and over again and I knew there had to be a better way. I realized that I could take the strategies that I had developed for my own closet and use them to help other people define their personal style while staying true to their slow-fashion values.
After a few years of working successfully with clients one-on-one, I made the decision to expand my reach by sharing my favorite sustainable, size inclusive brands on the Style Me Slowly Podcast.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a style coach who teaches my clients how to use slow fashion to achieve closet contentment and a champion of sustainable, size inclusive brands.
I offer one-on-one style coaching services where I use my unique Style Guide Framework to help my clients discover their personal style without buying a whole new wardrobe. This approach creates freedom from restrictive style rules so that clients have the skills to shop and get dressed with confidence through all of the phases of their life.
As the host of the Style Me Slowly Podcast, I give sustainable, size-inclusive brand founders the chance to tell their story. Listeners get to hear the origin stories of their favorite brands, learn what it actually takes to increase a size range the right way, understand the obstacles that brands face by going against the status quo, and the payoff of building real relationships with customers who are more like friends. And they might just discover your new favorite brand in the process. Whether you already have a closet full of slow fashion, or you’re just dipping your toe into the world of sustainable, size inclusive style, the Style Me Slowly podcast is a place where we can give these brands the support that they deserve.
Have you ever had to pivot?
This entire business is the result of a pivot! After nine challenging years as a Middle School Social Studies teacher, I knew there had to be something else out there for me. I had been interested in sustainable fashion for many years at this point but it had never crossed my mind to turn it into a career. It took a good friend, who I had given style advice to many times before, to point out to me that I could be getting paid to give people the advice that I was giving her for free.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I had to unlearn the idea that I wasn’t qualified. I don’t have a degree in fashion or business. Everything I’ve learned has come from doing it (and sometimes getting it wrong) over and over again until I get it right.
