We recently connected with Marla McCall and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Marla, thanks for joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I learned how to do nails originally from watching You Tube videos (YTU). I decided to pursue nails as a career and enrolled in cosmetology school. Knowing what I know now, I wouldn’t have waited so long to enroll. In my defense, I was working full time and earning a masters degree. Im still working a 9-5 job, earned my MBA, and I’m a licensed nail technician.
Marla, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I have always known the power of the beauty industry. I always knew I wanted to be in it. I have always wanted to help people. I thought about nursing and that didn’t work because I got squeamish with the sight of a lot of blood. The beauty industry helps people too. I tried different components of the industry like hair. I didn’t fit right. I tried makeup and it didn’t fit right either. I eventually got to nails. Nails gave me enough space to be creative to satisfy that side of me and the ability to help someone feel more ‘put together.’ I love being a part of making someone feel better about themselves. It also makes me feel better too.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
In the middle of me getting my mail technician journey started the pandemic hit. Before the pandemic i wanted to own my salon and employ nail technicians, and other services. My MBA was going to help me the business side of the salon. In the middle of this journey, the pandemic hit, which required a major pivot in the direction I was taking.
My plans are to no longer own a salon, but to get into a salon suite. A salon suite is a much scales down salon. It typically is only the client and the artist. People did not completely stop their beauty services because of the pandemic, we all had to get creative on the who, what, where, and when. We all have our whys.
Eventually, I would like to own my own building of suites.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Im still building my social media presence. My advice is that everything is content that relates to your field. This includes opening packages, shopping for supplies, your process, just everything. Record it and upload on multiple social media platforms.
