We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Markus Lindsey a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Markus thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
First you have to define success. If money is a measure of success then you will never be happy. My measure of success is that people recognize my work and seek me out.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I got into photography in the mid 80’s while working at a local newspaper. Our photographer took an interest in me and taught me the whole darkroom process. It wasn’t until he was confident with my darkroom skills that he began to let me to start doing photo shoots. I believe that by learning the darkroom first has greatly shaped the way that I photograph subjects. Understanding how good photos look printed influence how my eye composes pictures in the camera.
Fast forward almost 4o years, I bought a digital camera to begin a new journey.
I have a background in digital printing and a love for nature. Marry the two together and I began Markus Lindsey Photography & Digital Artwork Services. My passion is wildlife and landscape photography. I spend most weekends selling my prints under my 10×10 canopy and markets and festivals. When I am not selling my own prints I am doing real estate photography, family lifestyle sessions, head shots and events.
What is “Digital Artwork Services”? I work with artist to digitize and reproduce their artwork. I work with many artist that do acrylic, watercolor and fiber art. I am able to scan or photograph art pieces and resize so that I can print various sizes of a piece to give an artist options to sell their art up to 13″ x 19″.
So, I do my own in-house printing on an 8-color inkjet printer. I use a variety of high quality photo and art paper. I also work with trade only printers to offer business cards, flyers, brochures, signs and much more. I offer full design to print services.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My mission is to bring people joy. It’s that simple. Business and Life does not need to be complicated. It might be a cliche, but Mark Twain said it best. “Find a job you enjoy doing, and you will never have to work a day in your life.”
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
My reward is when people compliment me on my work. It goes back to bringing people joy. Don’t get me wrong, I’m in this to make money. Money affords me the opportunity to do what I do, but when someone sees one of my prints and it evokes a memory that they share with me, I know that I’ve accomplished my job.
