We were lucky to catch up with MarKus A recently and have shared our conversation below.
MarKus, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
In 2015, while residing in Buenos Aires, Argentina, I began transitioning my work from the streets to a canvas. Initially a mere hobby and a distant dream, everything changed when I embarked on a work trip to NYC. The experience sparked a profound shift within me, compelling me to chase my career aspirations, eventually leading me to relocate to the bustling city.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I was born in São Paulo, Brazil, surrounded by the rich tapestry of art within my family. From a young age, I showed my creative talent by selling superhero drawings at school and then delving into street graffiti in São Paulo. Upon moving to Buenos Aires in 1998, I encountered the influential works of Basquiat and Picasso through art publications, further fueling my artistic exploration. As a self-taught artist, I honed my craft and then moved to New York in 2016, where my artistic style evolved, merging the essence of the streets of São Paulo, the vibrancy of Buenos Aires, and the depth of the New York art scene. My goal is always to create visually captivating and emotionally resonant art, investigating themes of identity, culture and society. I am currently affiliated with the renowned Cuban Fine Arts gallery in New York, under the guidance of Ed Steinberg, I am proud of the recognition obtained for my artistic efforts and achievements.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative, in my opinion, is the ability to express oneself freely and connect with others on a profound, emotional level through art. The joy of sharing something deeply personal and having it resonate with someone else, evoking emotions or sparking thoughts, is incredibly fulfilling. Additionally, witnessing the impact your creations have on people’s lives and the world around you is truly rewarding.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My creative journey is fueled by a mission to delve into the identity, culture, and societal nuances through art. I aim to create visually captivating pieces that evoke emotions and provoke thoughtful reflections. Ultimately, I strive to foster connections and understanding among individuals by exploring these profound and relatable aspects of human experience through my art.
