We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Marko Jankovic. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Marko below.
Hi Marko, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
Immigrated to the USA at age 17, alone. Growing up as a Serbian in Switzerland was hard. Lots or racism towards me because of the war going on in Yugoslavia at the time. Kids always made fun of me and bullied me. I got a scholarship to got to Berklee College of Music. I graduated the. moved to Los Angels where I worked my way up at an insurance corporation (AIL) all the way to #8 in the company, worldwide. I opened my own agency and after selling it at age 38 I was financially set for life. I then came back to my passions of music and flying and became a flight instructor to teach for fun.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Always wanted to do music but after graduating Berklee College of Music and coming to Los Angeles in 2001, the opportunities were sim. Te industry changed and became garbage. I had to wash dished at a restaurant. I went into real estate and insurance and worked 60 hour weeks and became number 8 in the company. It took a lot of sacrifices and hard work. Success comes at a price.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I started as a dish washer. I never quit. I never complained. I was always grateful for the opportunities this country provides. I never once took the American flag for granted. People here don’t know how good they have it and have become weak and entitled and full of excuses. I don’t give, nor take, excuses. You can be anything you want to be, regardless of race and gender. I was bullied in school, laughed at and told I’d never make it. Most those people now work for me and my wife.
When. things were the hardest, when I was broke and bankrupt in 2004, I never quit. I was the first one to come to work and the last one to go home.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Simple: do as you say. Successful people know when you’re a fake. Be real and show your worth to a client twist your actions. In Los Angeles you won’t survive otherwise.
Go above and beyond. More importantly: take accountability and hold people accountable. Don’t let people hide behind race, gender or sexual orientation when they make excuses.
