Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Markiss Mcfadden. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Markiss, thanks for joining us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
I firmly believe that success requires unwavering tenacity and the fortitude to push through obstacles. Challenges will come, but perseverance is the key. You can never give up. Achieving your dreams demands an extraordinary level of discipline, consistency, and self-confidence.
In 2008, after being laid off from my job, I made the decision to move back to Los Angeles in January 2009. For a year, I immersed myself in the industry, taking on student films, short films, and an independent feature—each project sharpening my skills and reinforcing my passion. But the financial strain was undeniable. I wasn’t making enough to sustain myself, and despite my dedication, I found myself on the verge of leaving LA, ready to return to Las Vegas to find stability.
During that difficult time, a friend kept urging me to go see Avatar, which had just been released in theaters. I was so deep in discouragement and depression that I wanted nothing to do with anything. But eventually, I gave in.
What happened next changed everything.
As the credits rolled, I sat in my seat, speechless. Avatar had left me completely enamored, inspired in a way I hadn’t felt in a long time. That film reignited something inside me—a reminder of why I started this journey in the first place. It gave me the push to hold on a little longer.
Soon after, I booked a role in Transformers: Dark of the Moon. That opportunity not only validated my persistence but also gave me the financial means to take my career into my own hands. With the money I earned, I started my own production company, stepping into a new chapter of my creative journey.
If I had given up when things got tough, my life today would look completely different. But I held on. And that made all the difference.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
At McFadden Family Films, we believe in the power of storytelling to uplift, inspire, and ignite change. Founded by Markiss McFadden, an award-winning independent filmmaker, actor, and director, our company is dedicated to producing emotionally powerful, visually stunning, and thought-provoking films that leave a lasting impact.
Our Journey: From Passion to Purpose
The journey into filmmaking wasn’t just a career move—it was a calling. Markiss McFadden’s path began with a deep love for cinema, but like many artists, the road was not always easy. After facing personal and professional challenges—including a moment of doubt that almost led him away from the industry—he found renewed inspiration through film itself. A single movie, Avatar, rekindled his passion and pushed him to stay the course. That perseverance led to landing a role in Transformers: Dark of the Moon and, ultimately, the creation of McFadden Family Films—a company built on resilience, creativity, and an unwavering belief in the power of storytelling.

How do you keep your team’s morale high?
At McFadden Family Films, we believe that a successful production is more than just the sum of its parts—it’s built on a foundation of strong leadership, clear communication, and a positive, collaborative environment. Managing a team, whether on set or behind the scenes, requires intentional effort to inspire, support, and bring out the best in everyone involved.
1. Lead with Purpose & Passion
A team looks to its leader for direction and motivation. When leadership is strong, the team follows suit. At McFadden Family Films, we set a clear vision for each project, ensuring that every team member understands not just their role, but their impact on the final product. We lead by example—working hard, staying committed, and remaining passionate about storytelling.
2. Foster Open Communication & Respect
Clear, transparent communication is key to a well-functioning team. We encourage an atmosphere where everyone’s voice is valued, from the director to the production assistants. Whether it’s giving feedback, listening to concerns, or making creative decisions, respect and open dialogue create a space where people feel heard and empowered.
3. Build a Collaborative & Supportive Culture
Filmmaking is a team sport, and the best work happens when every person feels like their contributions matter. We make sure to:
• Recognize hard work – Acknowledging contributions, big and small, helps keep morale high.
• Encourage creative input – Some of the best ideas come from unexpected places, and we welcome collaboration from every department.
• Support personal growth – Whether it’s mentoring up-and-coming talent or helping crew members develop new skills, we believe in investing in people.
4. Keep Energy & Motivation High on Set
Production schedules can be demanding, so maintaining high energy and morale is essential. At McFadden Family Films, we prioritize:
• A positive work environment – A set where people feel comfortable, motivated, and excited to be there.
• Celebrating small wins – Every milestone, from completing a scene to wrapping a project, is worth recognizing.
• Creating a family-like atmosphere – When people feel connected and supported, the work becomes more meaningful.
5. Handle Challenges with a Solutions-Oriented Mindset
In filmmaking, things don’t always go as planned. Equipment fails, schedules shift, and creative differences arise. How a leader handles these moments sets the tone for the team. At McFadden Family Films, we focus on solutions, not problems—staying adaptable, calm, and finding creative ways to push forward without losing momentum.
6. Show Gratitude & Lead with Integrity
One of the most powerful ways to maintain high morale is simple: gratitude. A great leader doesn’t just expect results; they appreciate the effort that goes into making something great. A sincere “thank you,” a thoughtful gesture, or even just taking a moment to recognize someone’s hard work can go a long way in making people feel valued.
Final Thoughts
At the end of the day, filmmaking is about passion, collaboration, and storytelling. A great leader understands that a film’s success is not just about what’s on screen but also about the experience of the people who made it happen. A happy, motivated team creates better work, stronger connections, and a more fulfilling creative journey.
At McFadden Family Films, we strive to create an environment where talent thrives, creativity flows, and every team member feels like they are part of something bigger than just a film—they are part of a movement.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
At McFadden Family Films, our approach to filmmaking, leadership, and entrepreneurship is deeply influenced by a combination of experience, mentorship, and powerful resources that have helped shape our vision. Whether it’s understanding the psychology of actors, crafting compelling character arcs, or studying the pioneers who came before us, these books and resources have played a critical role in our development as filmmakers and business owners.
1. The Power of the Actor – Ivana Chubbuck
Understanding performance and emotional depth is at the heart of great storytelling. Ivana Chubbuck’s The Power of the Actor has been a game-changer in how we direct and communicate with actors, helping us unlock authentic, layered performances that resonate with audiences. It emphasizes the psychological and emotional techniques that bring characters to life—something we prioritize in every McFadden Family Films production.
2. Directing Actors – Judith Weston
As filmmakers, knowing how to guide actors effectively is just as important as crafting a strong visual story. Judith Weston’s Directing Actors has been instrumental in refining how we collaborate with talent, ensuring that performances are not just technically correct but emotionally rich and deeply human. This book has shaped how we create a safe, creative space for actors, allowing them to deliver their best work.
3. The Visual Mindscape of the Screenplay – Bill Boyle
Cinematic storytelling isn’t just about dialogue—it’s about what the audience sees and feels. Bill Boyle’s The Visual Mindscape of the Screenplay has transformed how we think about visual storytelling, blocking, and composition. This book reinforces the idea that film is a language of images, and we use its principles to create striking, emotionally engaging visuals that enhance the narrative.
4. Character Arcs – Jordan McKay
Great films are driven by character transformation. Character Arcs by Jordan McKay is a must-read for anyone serious about storytelling, as it breaks down the emotional and psychological evolution of characters in a way that’s both analytical and practical. At McFadden Family Films, we ensure that every character we create has depth, growth, and a meaningful journey—because audiences connect with characters, not just plots.
5. Black Directors – Edited by Mbye Cham and Jean-Paul Rocchi
Representation and legacy matter. Black Directors highlights the groundbreaking contributions of Black filmmakers who have paved the way in the industry. This book serves as both inspiration and a roadmap, reminding us of the importance of telling our own stories, amplifying diverse voices, and pushing against industry barriers. McFadden Family Films is built on the belief that our stories deserve to be told with power, authenticity, and artistic excellence.
Beyond Books: Videos, Essays, and Other Resources
In addition to books, we regularly draw insights from:
• Masterclass with James Cameron, Ron Howard & Spike Lee – Learning from legendary directors on storytelling, shot composition, and working with actors.
• Ava DuVernay’s TED Talk on Storytelling – A powerful reminder that representation in media isn’t just important—it’s necessary.
• Essays on Film Theory & Visual Storytelling – Works by André Bazin and Bell Hooks have shaped how we approach cinema as both an art form and a social tool.
• Behind-the-Scenes Documentaries – Watching how great filmmakers navigate the chaos of production teaches us the real-world aspects of running a set.
Final Thoughts
At McFadden Family Films, our philosophy is rooted in artistry, authenticity, and empowerment. These books and resources have helped shape our approach to filmmaking, business, and leadership, ensuring that we not only create powerful films but also cultivate a strong, inspiring creative environment.
We believe that continuous learning, studying the greats, and pushing creative boundaries are the keys to lasting success in this industry. Whether it’s understanding character depth, refining directorial techniques, or honoring the legacy of Black filmmakers, we remain lifelong students of the craft—because the best storytellers are always learning.
