We were lucky to catch up with Markia Baker Navi Johnson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Markia Baker thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Going back to the beginning – how did you come up with the idea in the first place?
(Markia) We came up with the idea of NM Legaci Marketing while at brunch in February of 2022. We were discussing our individual business ideas and realized we both were doing social media marketing for clients individually! Navi mentioned it would be great to have a woman-owned social media marketing firm to support the larger clients in our city! At the time, Navi had been running another business of her own and I was doing a lot of volunteering along with us both working 9-5’s. We are also moms and still had goals for much more! Going into business together just made the perfect sense because we related on so many levels. We also knew we could go much further and be more impactful in our roles as social media managers if we merged our skill-sets together!

Markia Baker , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
(Navi) Both of us have degrees in communications and we realized that we have a passion for creating engaging content and helping others grow an online presence. We provide social media strategies, social media takeovers where we fully create content and schedule posting, we conduct social media workshops for business owners. We’re most proud of our clients’ results after working with us. We’ve worked with a photography company who offered a program called Headshot Happy Hour and after working with us for only one month, they sold out her spaces for the event for the first time in five years. What sets us apart is that we are solution sellers. We understand that in order to better market your brand or service, you have to present and market what your service solves. We use this practice for each of our clients and create content based on their unique solutions.

Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
(Markia) Can you tell us the story of how you met your co founder/business partner? We met in 2020 at the RVA Black Farmer’s Market here in Richmond, Va! Navi owns and runs the RVA Black Farmer’s Market and I saw the opportunity to volunteer on instagram and signed up! We became good friends over the years as I remained a volunteer for the next 3 years until NM Legaci Marketing was formed.
How did you build your audience on social media?
(Navi) We know that we are a service-based business and we are also moms, boy moms in particular. We wanted to build our content around advice and resources for both working-moms and entrepreneurs. With that in mind, we created content that speaks to women like us who want to build a brand while simultaneously raising our children. We started by designating certain days for different content. On Mondays we post gems for working moms, which are just reflections that we use for ourselves that keep us going. On Tuesday’s, we post social media tips and on Thursdays we post resources and events for entrepreneurs.
A content schedule is one of the key pieces of advice that we give to our clients, especially those starting fresh on socials. We encourage them to build and maintain consistency by creating a content calendar and using a scheduler to find out optimal posting times for their audience. Creating content in buck and scheduling out saves so much time and allows them to focus on other aspects of their business.
