We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Marki Hunt. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Marki below.
Marki, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Looking back at internships and apprenticeships can be interesting, because there is so much variety in people’s experiences – and often those experiences inform our own leadership style. Do you have an interesting story from that stage of your career that you can share with us?
I think the biggest lesson for me when it comes to experience is that you don’t always have to know everything you’ll need to know when you’re going into it. I didn’t have any business experience and certainly not a business degree. Sometimes you just have to take the leap and be willing to learn things as you go. You may feel unprepared but I assure you that you will learn everything that you need to know, right when you need to know it. I think that the fear of not being educated enough in a specific field or topic holds a lot of people back from taking the leap. They tell themselves “When I know more about XYZ, then I’ll do it.” or “When I know more about business, then I’ll start one.” But it doesn’t work like that. You will never know enough to feel ready, sometimes you just jump and trust the process.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I became interested in medicine at a very young age and had always wanted to pursue a career as a nurse. After graduating high school I became EMT certified and started working on an ambulance to support myself through nursing school. After nursing school I went on to pursue my goal of becoming an Emergency/Critical Care Nurse and started working in a level 1 trauma center ER. During these years I became very interested in nutrition, regenerative medicine, and holistic health. Since early adulthood I had always used a more natural approach to healing in my own life and felt that this path of medicine was more in alignment with the way I lived. Four years into working in the Emergency Room I started a side business that focused on IV vitamin replacement, micronutrient testing, stem cells, and other forms of regenerative wellness. This side business soon blossomed into a full time business. Myself and my team have worked hard to expand and help serve more people and I now run locations in Park City/Salt Lake, Jackson Hole WY, and Aspen & Denver, Colorado. We love being able to help treat our patients from a holistic approach by replenishing vitamins and nutrients they are deficient in while encouraging a healthy life style. While I believe that a combination of regenerative and modern medicine is how patients should be treated, I think that first and foremost nutrition, exercise, and addressing health concerns from a holistic view is the foundation of all health.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One of the hardest lessons for me in early business was finding a balance with work so as to not burn myself out. For the first couple of years during the growth of the business I was also working full time in the emergency room. I worked constantly, non-stop. Once my business was self sustaining and I was able to leave the ER I still spent the same amount of hours working and expanding the business. I was convinced that the harder I worked and the more successful we were then the sooner I could step away but that wasn’t true at all and the overwhelm that I was inviting into my life was not sustainable. I had to create boundaries with myself and remind myself that working harder doesn’t always equal more success or more happiness. I ended up putting people in place to help me out so that I was able to step away from the business more and in turn I became happier and as a company we were able to grow and expand more. Having an amazing team is crucial for success.

Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
Yes! I loved starting out my career in emergency medicine and trauma. While I currently do not practice in the field it is an invaluable skill to have. Looking back, I experienced more growth during my time in the ER than any other period of my life. I am so grateful for my nursing career and all that it has brought into my life. Even though I have gone down the business path, I do think that one day I would like to go back and work in the ER a few days a month. Connecting with patients, being able to comfort and care for someone, and making a difference in peoples lives in that way is a feeling that you can’t find just anywhere.
