Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Markel Dantzler. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Markel thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I first learned to use a camera when I was very young and ever since I’ve been honing my skills. I think the most important skill wasn’t a technical skill however, but the skill of creative problem solving. If I could go back and apply my current knowledge, I’d use more of my time experimenting with different lenses and different lighting setups to really get a greater grasp of what kinds of images, looks and feels I can create with a camera. The only obstacles that ever stood in my way of learning as much as I could was time and money, but as I continue down the creative path, I’m realizing that those things are not as much as a burden as they once were.

Markel, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m Markel “Kel” Dantzler and I’m the founder of Kelevision, a video production company based out of Atlanta, GA. My journey as a creative started when I began making YouTube videos with friends in high school where I found the passion to create content to entertain audiences. After I found my footing at university, I began working on video content with local artists around Atlanta with the hopes of bringing their vision to life, whether it be promotional material, music videos, or scripted content. I made my brand about giving the artist first priority to craft the story they’d like to tell, and I was able to find success helping up incoming artists find their voice and reach a wider audience. I made it a personal goal of mine to set my work apart from others by simply doing things the way I see fit and adopting my own visual style and so far it’s worked wonders for me and my clients.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
What I want to do with my art is tell the stories that I want to tell in the way that I’d like to tell them. I want to tell stories that have an impact as well as entertain. I want to take what I imagine and materialize it and that is something that I make an effort to achieve. It’s a beautiful thing to see your vision for something come to life in the way that you envisioned it, and though you may not always get it perfect, just making the effort to make a fun idea a reality is more than a reward for your efforts. It’s truly a fulfilling moment to see your creation jump off the page and onto the canvas, whichever one it may be, and it is something that I always strive for whether I’m taking portraits or shooting a film.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is the connections you make doing what you love to do. I’ve met so many interesting people and lifelong friends being an artist and it’s even better when we are able to collaborate together to create something we can be proud of and that can make an impact on a wide audience. I love meeting new people and learning new things and just getting to know more about my craft and the world around me and being a creative allows me to do just that.
