We were lucky to catch up with Markeisha Samuel recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Markeisha , thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
Who has a wig cleaners? When I first started networking, I heard that question repeatedly. Even the words “wig cleaners” always had a question mark at the end of it. When I came up with the idea of creating a wig cleaners, I knew it was an out of the box idea but that is one of the reasons why I did continue down the path of getting my business off the ground. Out of the box thinking is what was needed in this industry but comes with a lot of risk. This is a business that is out of the ordinary and people are not use to “out of ordinary.” When people are used to normal, they do not know how to accept the change, they may even see it as losing some part of their identity and/or lifestyle and not looking at how beneficial it may become. We are the new normal; with the wig industry evolving in every way imaginable it is time to face the change. As for any new inventions people are not use to comes with a negative first reaction. It may take a while for people to become comfortable with the idea.
Boss Babe Wig Cleaners LLC is the biggest risk I’ve taken which means it must succeed. Suffering with Lupus (Discoid & Systemic) I seen an open opportunity to create something that will become beneficial not only for my marked audience but for anyone who would love to bring their unit back to life. Losing a lot of hair from the Discoid lupus pushed me to find realistic units and be able to provide those units to Boss Babes who are looking for realistic units as well and be able to purchase those units with assistance from their insurance company for those whom qualify. Spoken by the great Sy Sperling “I’m not only the owner but I’m also a client.” If I expect exceptional service than I must provide that same service to my customers.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Who would have known being diagnosed with Lupus would drive a passion to create a franchise in the making, Boss Babe Wig Cleaners, LLC. In 2002, I was diagnosed with Systemic and Discoid Lupus. When I was diagnosed, I dwelled in the negative aspect of this disease and how it affected my health. Not knowing the beauty of this disease and how it will teach me to encourage others.
It was to the point where the discoid was highly active and caused me to lose a lot of hair which became overwhelming. Most women are self-conscience about hair loss and how it affects their appearance. Due to having a traumatic past, I refused to allow this disease to consume me. I educated myself on this disease and joined all the forums/blogs I could find; not being from Dallas I needed all the support I could get. I started to wear wigs and while learning how to care for my wigs properly to ensure longevity, standing on my feet to wash my wigs became a chore due to the disease also left me extremely fatigue. I figured if I was suffering from extreme fatigue, I’m sure other people with autoimmune diseases also shared the same problem. It was also hard for me to find realistic wigs that made me feel comfortable in wearing where people cannot tell it was a wig.
I was determined to find a better solution while in the process encouraging fellow Boss Babes that rather they have hair or not they are beautiful. In the world we live in today wigs are now considered accessories. Boss Babe Wig Cleaners was established and as with any business starting from ground up in the middle of the pandemic came with rough patches. I have had people really support my vision which is contradictory from people original response. Many do not know how to care for their units properly and not realizing by caring for your unit the right way will save you money from buying a new unit as often. I have learned how to care for my units where they look like the first day you purchased them. Our mission is to allow all Boss Babes rather you have an autoimmune disease or not to feel as if they just walked out of the salon, it’s like a spa for your wig. We want to make sure you not only feel good on the inside but also look like a Boss Babe on the outside and we are here to support all.
We want to shed awareness of diseases/cancers that cause hair loss and in hopes of educating our Boss Babes who can also shed Boss Skool Awareness. We contribute a percentage of sales to a charity every month and providing support. It is not about hiding your bald and beautiful but when you want to have a different hairstyle that you would not be able to have on a regular is when I am here to help. We want to gain your business and show you how beneficial we would be. We are excited about becoming a provider by the end of year. It will open many doors for what we have in the making. Looking forward to making the process as seamless as possible. “Welcome To the Future of Keeping Your Investments Clean and Revitalized.”
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
We started with very little money, and I learned to adapt in order for my business to thrive. I understood a millionaire mindset you need multiple streams of income. I did customizations that contributed to helping build the finances I needed to get the business off the ground. Customizations was expected to roll over to customizing attached wig caps, accessories, and headbands for wigs. I understood the concept of not mixing business with pleasure. Every dollar I earn is recycled back in the business where I was able to save enough to keep building Boss Babe Wig Cleaners LLC.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
The point of diligence is resilience; having Lupus (systemic and discoid) I had to have resilience to endure through this disease and find a way I could manage it properly while keeping that passion and momentum for my business. Most people look at me and do not believe I have a deadly disease but I humbly say “I make this look good.” Every day is a daily struggle some better than others but I have managed to keep striving through it all. I have learned my body well enough to know when it is time to take a break and when I can put in the work without repercussion. This is a one-woman band when it comes to marketing, managing, etc… Being vulnerable by expressing my disease makes me resilient and I must endure in order to become successful. Our anniversary is August 1st and this is a blessing to have a third interview to commemorate our third anniversary. I pray for another thousand years of resiliency and watch it become a franchise.
